The World’s 50 Best Bars were announced in London this morning, Australia time – and only one Aussie bar has made the list.

Sydney’s Maybe Sammy, a snazzy 1950s Vegas-inspired cocktail bar, which opened in January this year, has debuted on the list at number 43. It was also awarded Best Bar in Australasia.

Four Australian bars were included in the supplementary 51 to 100 list that was announced last week.

This is the first time since the awards began 11 years ago that Melbourne bar Black Pearl hasn’t featured on the top 50 list. It placed at 80 on the 51 to 100 ranking this year. Three Sydney bars – Baxter Inn, Bulletin Place and PS40 were also ranked on the ancillary list.

Dante in New York was named the world’s best bar, followed by Connaught Bar in London at number two. The UK had the most entries on the list with 10, followed by the US with seven and Singapore with six.

New York’s Employees Only was ranked at number 26 and London’s Scout came in at number 28 – both have opened outposts in Sydney in the past year.

The awards are voted for by an academy of more than 520 experts, including bartenders, writers and cocktail specialists.
