On Saturday, Gelato Messina ran a promotion giving away free choc-chip cookie pies to anyone who spent more than $32 on a Messina order on Deliveroo. Turns out lockdown hasn’t tempered people’s love for everything and anything Messina – particularly when it’s free. The demand was so high that Deliveroo drivers flooded the chain’s stores and the gelateria had to switch off its ordering system altogether to catch up.
Perhaps you missed out on a free pie last week, or you loved it so much you’re ready for round two. Either way, Messina has you covered: it’s releasing another cookie pie on Wednesday – this time a red-velvet number studded with white-choc chips. Sadly the halcyon days of free pies are over – these scarlet beauties will set you back $20 – and you’ll have to pre-order and pick them up from any Messina store. (Though some pies have been set aside for delivery to those who are in quarantine or genuinely can’t leave the house for health reasons.)
The good news is that the pies will be available for longer this time: a full five days, from April 29 until May 3. Messina is also discounting its gelato tubs when you buy a pie (because nobody wants a dry cookie). Get a 500-millilitre tub for just $8 extra (a saving of $6.80) or a one-litre tub for $14 (a saving of $10.80).
Messina can’t promise there won’t be more cookie-related chaos this time around, but the company hopes that by spreading pick-up across five days and charging a fee it’ll avoid another Free Cookie-Pie Saga.
