Last month, we launched Broadsheet Wine – our very own wine club delivering you restaurant-quality drops every month. They are hand-picked by us with the help of some of our favourite hospo friends who love wine just as much as we do.
January’s Chin Chin x Broadsheet Wine box launches this week, featuring easy-to-please bottles guaranteed to liven up your next dinner party. Work your way through all six and you might even end up with a dance floor. We’ve collaborated with Isobel McFadden – sommelier at Chin Chin Sydney – to bring this box to life.
McFadden started out as a wine sales rep for an online company before moving to Lucas Restaurants’ Sydney outpost in 2018. “To be honest,” she says, “office life was a bit of a fluorescent snooze-fest and I wanted to do something more active. Boy, did I get my wish. Chin Chin was my first real hospitality job, and it was truly a baptism of hellfire chilli oil and pink neon.”
Chin Chin Sydney has a palpable buzz about it, filled with guests cheerfully sharing a glass or five of wine over crowd-pleasing dishes. It’s an energy McFadden has captured in this selection, with a “line-up of wines that you can drink through in one night – with the help of a good crew, of course! It needed to be like hanging out with a group of friends who have great chemistry. Easygoing, lighthearted, bright and eclectic.”
The mix is playful, ranging from a vivacious sparkling chenin blanc from Margaret River to an approachable, new-school grenache shiraz mataro made from McLaren Vale vines that are more than 40 years old. Of particular note is Ravensworth’s Long Way Around bianco, which McFadden considers to be very special. It was “first made out of necessity as result of the devastating bushfires that ravaged Australia in 2019–20. Those grapes collectively travelled 5000 kilometres to make that year’s vintage. Each wine is a blend of whatever [winemaker Bryan Martin’s] mates had to give. So, as well as tasty, they’re quite unique. Hardship, mateship, survival – the first vintage saw it all.”
And McFadden’s favourite in the box? “I’m just a sucker for German riesling. Von Buhl’s entry-level riesling is a cracker. Any wine I can drink with, or pour on, oysters is a winner for me.”
The Chin Chin x Broadsheet Wine box is available to purchase via the Broadsheet Shop from $150. Order quickly, as numbers are very limited.
