My partner and I have a recurring standoff over who’s going to wash the empty peanut jar that’s been soaking on the windowsill for more than a week. And yet, those dry, nutty dregs still cling to the sides no matter how long it’s been soaking for. Still, we wait …

Sydneysiders Georgia Park and Jason Spyrides are offering a solution to this and other PB-related problems. Launched in July, Drizzy is a pourable, no-mess version of the king of spreads, made with roasted peanuts sourced from Kingaroy in Queensland.

Park and Spyrides say they spent months testing various peanut varieties, processing methods and temperature conditions to achieve Drizzy’s honey-like consistency. The combination of peanuts with a naturally high fat content and peanut oil was key to success. As was the processing method.

“We never wanted to dilute the product or fill it with stabilisers simply to make it easier to squeeze, so the challenge was getting the peanuts, grinding process and bottle to work together,” says Park.

“The peanut variety and roast determine the flavour and natural oil content, while the grind controls how smoothly the product moves through the bottle. Small changes in particle size, processing temperature or grinding time can completely alter the consistency,” adds Spyrides.

That consistency means Drizzy has no trouble dispensing from its large-format squeeze bottle. Pour onto your morning toast and add to smoothies, yoghurt bowls and even desserts.

The Australian peanut industry is in decline, as major supermarkets undercut production with overseas imports and climate change continues to impact local growing conditions. Regardless, Park and Spyrides are making a major play for the American market, with Drizzy currently stocked in 500 locations of organic grocer Sprouts.

“America is the world’s most exciting peanut butter market, but the category has looked and functioned much the same for decades,” says Spyrides. “We believe there is room for a brand that makes it more convenient, more versatile and much more fun.”

Drizzy is available nationally in individual 550-gram bottles (RRP $14.95) and packs of two (RRP $28.95).
