The London-based authority behind the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants, an international guide that sends “steak ambassadors” to hundreds of grills on five continents in search of the best beef, has released its adjacent list of world-class burgers. While past performance is no indicator of future results, it’s no surprise we brought the fire.

Australia placed 11 times in a global ranking of 101 burgers. Neil Perry’s Sydney diner Cafe Margaret scored highest at three, making it the best Aussie burger spot overall for its American cheeseburger comprising a 200-gram Coppertree Farms beef pattie, American cheese, onions, pickles and rose mayo (a blend of tomato and “umami” sauce).

Sydney venues accounted for more than half the total Australian entries and included The International, Wills, Restaurant Hubert, Bar Julius, The Gidley and Clam Bar

From Melbourne, hyped Melbourne burger joint Charrd was back for the second year in a row at 13, followed by newcomer Seoul Tiger 1988, which landed at 37 for its Korean-inspired burgers. Jake Kellie’s Adelaide fine diner Arkhé debuted at 45, followed by Wollongong’s Debutant Dining at 64.

Ranking criteria supplied to Broadsheet includes meat quality and provenance, composition and execution, consistency, guest experience, online presence and reputation, sustainability and responsibility, and compliance with HACCP standards.

The number one spot went to London chain Bleecker Burger. Here are the full Australian results.
