There are puffers aplenty, classic wool and cashmere silhouettes, and sleek leather additions to make to your cold-weather collection. Local brands like Blanca, Pfeiffer and Elka Collective are just some of the names to know.

We might be on the countdown to spring, but the truth is that August often brings some of the year’s harshest weather – and a trusty trench can only take you so far. The good news is that Aussie brands have delivered in spades this season, shielding you from the elements with classic wool and cashmere layers, luxe leather designs, and fashionable takes on functional puffers. The upside of picking up a new coat later in the year is that some have already hit end-of-season sales.

Wool and cashmere
Wrap silhouettes, double-breasted fits and car coats arrive in cosy wool and cashmere season after season. They’re the wardrobe additions you know you will always be able to turn to. Camilla and Marc’s oversized Melton coat comes in a rich camel hue with a self-tie belt. Oroton renders its double-face overcoat in a light blue colourway that will break up the heaviness of shades more typical at this time of year. Viktoria & Woods leans into classic styling with its minimalist Paloma overcoat in dark grey. And Kiwi brand Harris Tapper follows suit with the longline felted wool Egon coat.

Assembly Label offers up a range of timeless pieces once again: the Sadie comes in seasonal colours like burnt ochre and cypress green, while the single-breasted wool coat and double-breasted alpaca coat are cut with relaxed proportions. Friends With Frank’s checked Prudence coat brings tailored appeal to this list. The Sydney brand’s signature shackets and cropped bombers are worthy trans-seasonal choices, too. Melbourne brand Handsom is another name to keep on your radar for well-made woollen wares.

Blanca applies its colourful approach to the Adeline, an oversized magenta-hued style (which also comes in black). And if you’re looking for brighter options, Steele’s cocoon-like Vera coat comes in lilac herringbone and green checked iterations this season.

Leather
Leather weather is upon us. New Sydney brand Pfeiffer makes its mark with the Marcelle coat in moss green. Viktoria & Woods keeps things classic with the black Casino style, which is finished with contrasting white details. Camilla and Marc doubles down on luxury with its shearling-lined Kula jacket – the oversized, cropped silhouette follows a minimalist motto and is finished with debossed logo details. And Aere brings an urban edge to the mix with its bomber. Meanwhile, Elka Collective’s Kasper jacket in chocolate brown and Amenat coat in black offer vegan alternatives.

Puffer
Whether you opt for sporty styles or lean into fashion’s fascination with the silhouette, there’s room for a puffer jacket in every winter wardrobe. Aje Athletica and PE Nation err on the performance side with signature logo-clad styles. The Kamani puffer from Camilla and Marc walks between athleisure and statement wear with its oversized silhouette and detachable hood.

Unreal Fur is here to make you feel like you’re still wrapped in your doona with its Dune coat – the elasticated belt brings structure to a silhouette that can sometimes be overwhelming. And the Quantum jacket brings an artful edge with its asymmetrical stud closure and blue stitched details. Marle’s quilted Avery jacket offers a more refined option with less padding, while Steele’s paisley Natalia jacket is a statement worth making.

When it comes to function, chic rainproof options that actually shelter you from the storm can be hard to come by. Amble Outdoors keeps things classic with its Overland jacket in black. But the Melbourne brand also caters to your playful side with its colourful and printed versions of the Refuge style.
