Big-ticket fashion purchases are usually made in winter. Every few seasons or years, it comes time to update coats and jackets, tall boots, scarves and other winter accessories. Before splashing out on a luxe new overcoat or a pair of swanky gloves, it’s best to know they’ll stand the test of time in your collection. Here’s what these stylists are planning on purchasing this winter.

Sally MacKinnon, Melbourne personal stylist

“It’s clear that burgundy is the colour of the season, and I’m particularly loving the darker brownish burgundy shades at St Agni. I just invested in their burgundy, leather barrel-shaped trousers which I absolutely love, and will wear them all year round. I’m going to look at the Viktoria & Woods oxblood long leather gloves too! I think these will be so chic under blazers and coats this winter.”

Stuart Walford, Melbourne stylist and creative producer

“I’m really trying to shop my wardrobe at the moment and take stock of what I have before purchasing new pieces for the season. I’ve noticed I don’t own any beanies or scarves, so these are high on my list, along with some great winter basics. I tend to purchase bold, statement pieces but what I lack are the simple building blocks to help turn these items into practical looks that will go the distance. Sometimes the boring basics are the real heroes!”

Liv Brown, Melbourne personal stylist

“I am trying to be good this winter and not overbuy. I have found some amazing second-hand shops around Melbourne, so I am hoping to do a little stocking up there and be good to go for the cooler months. I recently went to Mutual Muse in Northcote and found a shirt, cardigan and blazer. I do want to buy a matching tracksuit. Zulu & Zephyr have some really nice ones I need to try on. I would also love a cute faux fur hat – I might have a look at Unreal Fur for one.”

Peter Simon Phillips, Sydney stylist and creative director

“On my winter fashion wishlist? Loewe, Loewe, Loewe. With Jonathan Anderson stepping down, I’m keen to snap up as much as I can — especially the draped pants (the jeans in particular), which already feel like a collector’s item. They’re a testament to his creativity and his ability to design the must-have piece of the season.

I’m also eyeing Romance Was Born’s collection created in collaboration with Zaachariaha Fielding. The prints are incredible and exactly the kind of energy I want to carry through the colder months. And then there’s tailoring — always in, but especially right now. My go-to is Umi Nori Atelier: bespoke, classic but with a modern edge. Their suits are true heirloom pieces – the kind you invest in now and pass down for years to come.”

Jana Pokorny, Melbourne stylist and creative consultant

“I’m thinking about accessories to update what I already own. Like this necklace from Juju Vera to wear with cashmere knits and denim, narrow knee-high, low-heel boots like these, or a chocolate or olive suede bag like this one from Yumei.”

Lana Wilkinson, Melbourne celebrity stylist and shoe designer

“Accessories are on my wishlist in a big way. After all, accessories truly make an outfit. On a personal note, I’m loving my shoe brand’s Huw knee-high boot in chocolate brown croc leather and the Spencer loafer in brown suede.

I am dying over all things Saint Laurent. I always try and ensure I only buy two statement (read: expensive) accessories a year that can ultimately tie into my current wardrobe. Bag-wise, I love the Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 in red patent leather. It’s so versatile and a great size. I’m all about the cost per wear! I also am adding the Saint Laurent Dome earrings to my wishlist. They are timeless and elegant but will elevate any outfit I’m wearing. I justify it by saying that they can be added to my styling kit for clients.

From a clothing perspective, I’m eyeing the Henne Bowie blazer and Rory jeans. They are giving full ’90s vibes. Perfect for my work wardrobe, the blazer has all my favourite elements – shoulder pads and a cinched waist, and the high-rise jeans will solve all my short-girl problems.

Rochelle Renwick, Perth stylist

“I’m loving Khy’s full-length faux coats but Perth weather doesn’t really give me a chance to wear something that cosy. The Frankie Shop’s Gaia double-breasted coat, with its boxy shape, exaggerated shoulder pads and length, is perfection. Long coats that finish at the ankle are such an easy way to elevate outfits. You can wear them with sweats, denim or dresses; they can be worn over almost anything. I also love Lover’s Aurelia Pu trench, I adore the shade of green and its croc-like texture.”
