If anyone needs proof the flat is making a comeback, just look to cult loafer label Mara & Mine. The footwear specialist was launched in Los Angeles in 2012 by Sydney expats and best friends Tamara Ingham and Jasmine Yarbrough. Since then it’s gone from strength to strength, with the pair’s darkly playful designs attracting fans in Cara Delevingne, Margot Robbie, Chanel Imam and Kendall Jenner.
In the past, Ingham and Yarbrough’s collections have been geared towards conversation-starting designs, such as the bestselling Alexandra Scorpion Mules and expletive-laden slipper designs (some read “Fuck You”). Their latest Zodiac collection allows you to wear your heart on your shoe.
Based on Mara & Mine’s signature mule-style slide silhouette, the Zodiac collection comes in a series of black-satin slippers embroidered with astrology symbols. The already personal act of wearing your star sign is taken one step further by each pair of shoes being made-to-order.
“We really pride ourselves on individuality and the zodiac exudes that,” says Yarbrough. “We felt that star-sign slides would really allow an individual’s personality to shine through and all these symbols exude greater meaning, which is quite cool.
“Obviously, there are lots of different signs and shapes for each zodiac sign, so we just chose our favourites, which we stitch onto the slides alongside a different star constellation for each.”
Between the “lustrous” black satin with gold-and-silver embroidery, Yarbrough says they went for a “luxe feel and look” that was designed to take you from day to night. “It’s touching on that bold style we love to refer to as well,” she says.
Because the Zodiac collection is made to order, it will not be available in either of Mara & Mine’s flagship stores in Sydney or L.A., but can be pre-ordered via Mara & Mine’s website. A slightly tweaked version of the Zodiac collection – with a more pointed mule in a raffia fabric – was also designed exclusively for online shop Moda Operandi (these aren’t customisable, though).
The Zodiac collection will be available on the Mara & Mine website from May 11 May this year, and will be complemented with an event at Sydney Fashion Week, which runs from May 13 to May 19 at Carriageworks.
“We can’t tell you any of the details at this point,” Yarbrough says of the event, “but we do have a very special guest coming. She’s Australian and living internationally, and we’ve loved her for years and admired her independent style and individuality.”
The Zodiac collection will be available online from May 11, 2018.
