Sydney knitwear brand Wah-Wah is on a roll with its recent collaborations. There’s the cosmic collab with Tony Albert, these supernatural numbers with artist Nell and a return of the long-time fave with Kaylene Whiskey (back in stock).
And now there’s a new design to covet: Wah-Wah x John Prince Siddon’s trippy red web pattern, featuring a fearsome redback spider. Kaylene Milner, the one-woman machine behind the brand, says it’s “Three Australian icons for the price of one.”
Siddon, an artist from the Great Sandy Desert, is known for his psychedelic surrealist paintings that often reference Aboriginal creation stories, Australian animals or current affairs. The new 100 per cent superfine merino knit has a striking red design with wavy yellow, purple and blue stripes down the sleeves. It’s $280, and you can order one now and have it delivered in time for Christmas.
If you’re baulking at the cost, you shouldn’t. Wah-Wah breaks down the various elements that go into creating its maximalist knitwear in this Instagram video – essential viewing for all of us who’ve become too accustomed to fast fashion prices. (I’m also the proud owner of a Wah-Wah jumper and can confirm it’s very good value for money. My Girl Maths says it’s practically free on a price-per-wear model.)
If you’re worried December will be too hot for a new merino knit try Wah-Wah’s new summer collection, called Cosmic Surf. The lightweight cotton range complements its existing minimalist knits. Its wavy design is as trippy as the new John Prince Siddon design, and the unisex knit shirt is a little cheaper than its merino cousins, at $170.
