Venroy – which is known for its breezy Bondi-friendly leisurewear, originally for men – has launched its first-ever winter collection for women.
Since 2010, the Sydney label has grown from a couple of childhood friends making well-cut swimming trunks in a small Marrickville factory into a global fashion label.
In addition to its Bondi flagship store, Venroy now has shopfronts in Paddington and Mosman, as well as in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, which means customers coming in all year round.
Sydney-based co-founder Sean Venturi – who generally favours lightweight, breathable fabrics such as linen – says he wasn't initially inspired by winter, but his customers kept asking for options for the cold.
In 2016, he and co-founder Theo Smallbone, who left the business in May 2018, introduced the label’s first winter collection for men. Following the successful launch of the label's first summer collection for women last year, Venturi has now followed up with its first dual winter collections.
Ninety per cent of Venroy’s garments, which are designed for comfort and beachside living, are made from linen. And even in winter the “hero fabric” remains, Venturi says, but it’s bonded for a slightly heavier, more structured finish.
“In winter we don’t really think about what people are doing during the week; what inspires us is what people are doing on the weekends,” he says.
“If you’re in Sydney, [that’s] heading out to the Southern Highlands or up to the Blue Mountains for weekends away and [we’re] just catering to that – keeping people cosy and comfy.”
It’s also the first time Venturi has done knitwear for women, and he's opted for luxurious merino-cashmere and cotton-cashmere blends.
Chunky roll-necks, which Venturi describes as “really big and soft and warm and cosy”, are complemented by lighter cotton-twill-bonded kimonos and terry-towelling sets. A belted wadded wrap jacket, carried over from the men’s collection, “is almost like wearing a doona”, he says. There are also apparel basics including linen shirts, V-neck dresses and camis.
New colourways, including biscuit (“a tan-y brown”), milk, army green and sky blue, have been added alongside core tones such as white, sand, navy and black.
A small 100-per-cent silk offering, in the form of a one-shoulder slip dress, a skirt and a cami, will also drop at the end of the month in the green and blue.
