How versatile is the barrel leg jean, anyway? In partnership with Flo & Frankie, we get fashion writer – and Broadsheet’s head of social media – Stephanie Vigilante to find out.

In the world of fashion writing, “uniform dressing” is often touted as the peak of chic. Yet, for most of us, the reality of wearing the same item – for seven days straight, no less – feels less like a profound style statement and more like the result of a lost-luggage nightmare.

So I decided to set a challenge: take one pair of jeans and build seven entirely different looks to see just how far a single silhouette could go. My canvas? The chocolate barrel leg jeans from Flo & Frankie. They’re the perfect base for everything from hurried mornings to elevated evenings. Here’s how it went.

Day 1: Weekend aperitivo hour

The challenge kicked off with a late-afternoon cocktail at Bar Carnation in Carlton North. I decided to see just how much “look” these jeans could handle right out of the gate. I layered them under a sheer lace skirt, paired it with an ice-blue knit (a colour I’m loving at the moment) and sharp burgundy slingback flats.

Day 2: Sunday produce run

Day two called for a crisp morning mission to the Alphington Farmers Market. I leaned into the tonal theme with a chocolate knit cardigan, layered with a tan Assembly Label trench and a striped triangle scarf (that doubled as a hood when the wind picked up). Sneakers were a safe bet for trudging through the grass. The roomy fit of the jeans make them an easy reach when I want the comfort of tracksuit pants but the put-togetherness of a trouser.

Day 3: Monday morning admin

I made a quick pit stop at Akimbo Bakery in Northcote to fuel up before the workday began and needed a look that was streamlined for a day of productivity. I paired the jeans with a grey long-sleeve top and threw on a black quilted jacket to beat the morning chill. I like to pair a barrel-leg with jackets that hit right at the waist or high hip to maintain my shape and prevent the outfit from looking like a monolith of fabric. The outfit was tied off with a satin scrunchie and simple brown ballet flats. It was an “easy”, effortless look for answering emails over a chilli-cheese pastry.

Day 4: Desk-to-dinner transition

Wednesday required an outfit with stamina – something professional for a day in the office that could pivot seamlessly to a restaurant preview dinner that night. I chose a sheer button-up top by Ivy & Jack, layering a white singlet underneath for a bit of extra warmth. The softer fabric and silhouette made for a great juxtaposition to the utilitarian shape of the jeans. For the evening, I added a pair of tulle earrings (a find from a tiny boutique in Italy that I will always find a way to mention to anyone that compliments them). And the pièce de résistance: E Nolan Nero T-Bar heels to round it all off.

Day 5: The Friday office flow

For a productive Friday in the office, I opted for a knit grey singlet layered over a cashmere boat-neck long sleeve. I wanted to highlight the forward seam of the jeans: a design detail in its own right, keeping the neutral palette from feeling flat. I finished the look with cream ankle boots and a matching cream shoulder bag. And dropped into Good Days for a restorative bowl of pho on my lunch break.

Day 6: Vintage clothes hunting

I love spending my weekends trawling the racks at some of Melbourne’s best curated vintage clothing stores, like PDA Shop in Fitzroy and Moods in Thornbury. For this activity, I went back to basics with a white tee featuring delicate shirring through the body. I tossed an unbuttoned blue-striped shirt over the top, accessorised with a brown resin bangle and a mini two-tone handbag – the ultimate low-fuss Saturday outfit.

Day 7: One final reset

By day seven, the denim had reached peak comfort, softened but still holding its barrel structure. For a final celebratory coffee, I went for a look that felt clean and pared back. I layered a grey marle baby tee, by Stories be Told, with a blue singlet and added texture with brown leather loafers and a tactile green handbag. In my opinion, barrel jeans look best when they show a hint of ankle (and can show off your shoes). This outfit was a playful end to a challenge that proved one pair of jeans really can be seven different things. The jeans are available at Flo & Frankie.
