The National Gallery of Victoria has unveiled Australia’s largest exhibition of avant-garde Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons.
Collecting Comme is a survey of more than 65 archival outfits by Rei Kawakubo, the label’s founder and head designer, who is perhaps best known for her signature Play T-shirts and recurring love-heart emblem.
For a label known for dismantling conventions in fashion, the November launch unsurprisingly drew a crowd wanting to make a statement. There were bold patterns and prints aplenty, from tartan to polka dot to check; hair was styled naturally in loose curls. Issey Miyake Pleats Please garments abounded, and chunky platform shoes were a common accessory.
Collecting Comme is on at NGV International until July 26, 2020. Entry is free. More information here.
