Cover Up: 12 Jackets Sporty Spice Would Approve Of
I’m looking for a jacket with pockets. Long sleeves. Zip up. Still cute.

I’m looking for the One. Not a man, a jacket.

It’s reaching the point of the year where puffers are overkill. But I still need a shell of sorts to keep warm before, during and after exercise. A jumper doesn’t hit right because of the pocket predicament – specifically, the lack of them. And I’m sort-of outdoorsy but not like belaying-down-a-cliff outdoorsy, so it needs to be chic.

If you’re in a similar sartorial bind, you’ll be pleased to know cinched waists are trending. And while black is always classic, tonal or colour-blocked styles in not too-bright shades are hitting home, too.

Nimble Cinch & Splash trench

$229
Nimble Cinch & Splash Trench
This 100 per cent waterproof (including reinforced taped seams) style is one of the most flattering raincoats I’ve ever found. It’s the bum-covering length and namesake cinch-able waist that give a chic shape on the body. But it also comes in the original slightly shorter silhouette.

PE Nation Shelter jacket

$229
PE Nation Shelter jacket
The new era of PE Nation knows what’s up. This style debuted on the runway at Australian Fashion Week in May and I’ve been pretty much stalking the website waiting for it to drop ever since. The only decision is whether to go black or green.

Lululemon textured fleece cinchable jacket

Another one I’ve been waiting to see in stores. There’s something a little bit teddy bear about this chocolate brown fleece. And again, cinching saves it from being too shapeless.

Patagonia natural blend retro cardigan

$650
Patagonia natural blend retro cardigan
You might recognise this retro-leaning jacket. To celebrate its 50th year, Patagonia has remade its most iconic pieces with recycled fibres – including this new spin on its widely loved fleece. Wearing this cosy number – which is made with recycled polyester and wool – is like re-entering the womb. It pairs best with your activewear on brisk morning walks to your pilates class or gym. But it’s also stylish enough to wear with jeans and kicks to brunch.

Aje Athletica Logo hooded spray jacket 742

$275
Aje Athletica Logo hooded spray jacket 742
Signature logo taping down the zipper elevates this from just any other black jacket around. It’s got a hood, mesh lining for breathability, and is made from recycled materials.

Camilla and Marc Maltese rain jacket

$650
Camilla and Marc Maltese rain jacket
Taking cues from Camilla and Marc’s signature tailoring, this rain jacket is decidedly minimal. The slightly oversized fit can be tapered with an internal drawcord at the waist. It does both sporty-ish and chic well.

Nike Windrunner jacket

This one brings a bolder hue and more of a performance bent. The crinkle-woven fabric, which is made from recycled nylon (including recycled carpet and used fish nets) has a water-repellent finish and UV technology. This monochrome dropped-shoulder style is another winner.

Amble Elements waterproof jacket

$219
Amble Elements waterproof jacket
Daily commute or weekend hike? Amble’s signature jackets do both. Elasticated cuffs help to keep water out in bad weather. The hood and hem can both be cinched for an adjustable fit.

Zorali Trail fleece

$150
Zorali Trail fleece
If you want something a little bit cosier, this recycled polyester fleece is warm but breathable. The snap-button closures go up to the neck to keep you toasty while it’s still chilly out there.

On Core jacket

$230
On Core jacket
There’s something so satisfying about a jacket that packs away into itself. This style, which is designed for running, is made from an ultra-lightweight fabric. These two features make it the ultimate travel companion, too.

Uniqlo Pocketable UV Protection parka

$69.9
Uniqlo Pocketable UV Protection parka
Another packable hit. The fabric has a UPF50+ rating, which means it’s suitable for rain and shine. A good option for when the elements are against you as you leave the house, but you might not need a jacket all day.

Adidas by Stella McCartney TruePace jacket

$360

Another one that’s technically for runners but can be worn by anyone. Bungee cords at the hood, back of the shoulders and hem help to create a customised fit depending on your activity. It’s also finished with reflective detailing which can be helpful with late sunrises and early sunsets.
