When Jillian Tait found herself unemployed amid Covid-19 lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020, she looked back at the natural remedies that comforted her in childhood. This inspired her to take an online course in aromatherapy.
“I grew up in Central Victoria and my mum always believed in natural remedies,” Tait tells Broadsheet. “I wanted to get back to helping people.”
Now an aromatherapy practitioner, Tait launched her online store Aromatherapy Dispensary earlier this year, where you can shop handmade essential oils, diffusers, room sprays and even DIY roll-on perfumes. The core range is targeted towards your specific needs, including the popular Tranquillity oil – a concoction of oils like marjoram, eucalyptus, chamomile roman, lavender and sandalwood, to help you drift off to sleep.
There’s also the Love Interest, which Tait says is a bit of an aphrodisiac. “It’s quite sexy,” she says. Set the mood at home with a blend of oils including rose damask, orange, white grapefruit, ylang ylang, patchouli and spearmint.
Plus, if you prefer to wear your fragrances, you can shop six different types of carrier oils – mildly scented oils which are safe for your skin. Tait explains that regular essential oils can be harmful when placed directly on skin, causing redness or irritation.
Instead, dilute a few drops of your favourite oil with a carrier blend, which you can place directly on your skin with the Naked perfume roller. There’s a handy dilution chart on the website too.
“The way I’ve bottled the essential oils, the process of having a top, middle and bottom base notes, creates an equal scent,” says Tait. “The synergy of all the oils coming together makes people feel good, which is really what I’m all about.”
Orders are packaged using debossed and recycled, recyclable and biodegradable materials made from organic plankton and algae – all sealed with a hand-melted and individually stamped wax seal. They also come with a gift of thyme seeds for you to grow and enjoy.
