For something you generally throw on as you walk out the door, sunglasses wield an extraordinary amount of style power. A good pair will kick any outfit up a few notches, whether you’re looking to add polish or pizzazz, swagger or style. Here are a few of our fave new frames.

Slimline Cat-Eye
The petite and elongated cat-eye works for just about every face shape, from oval to square to heart. Check out this rose-tinted pair by Aje, Holiday the Label’s easy-wearing tortoiseshell set, this black beauty by Sydney label Auór, and this angular Country Road number. This Le Specs seashell terrazzo-look set is beach-to-bar fab, while this blood-red pair by Epokhe – a local company founded by a filmmaker and two professional surfers – will turn heads.

’90s Throwback
This super-tiny style works best for smaller faces. Aussie label Szade’s slender frames are made from recycled polycarbonate destined for landfill. Perth-born accessories powerhouse Poppy Lissiman is known for her signature skinny silhouette, and we can’t get enough of the whimsical wavy band on the Cigarello by Velvet Canyon, a label with roots in Byron Bay.

The Modern-Day Aviator
Another all-rounder, the Aviator was originally designed for pilots in the 1930s. It suits heart, square and oval face shapes, but can have an elongating effect. Fun fresh colourways this year include these kaleidoscopic, opalescent frames, Ray Ban’s goth-friendly take, and this chunkier two-toned set by Rag & Bone. For more polish, look for slightly sharper edges as in this gold-edged Bottega Veneta pair.

Future Alpine
These wraparound sunnies will have you channelling the ski slopes of the future, and need a wide or long face to pull them off. We’re loving these streamlined, rainbow-hued frames by Poppy Lissiman; Szade’s neon visor-like specs, and this nod to the '80s by Bottega Veneta. Looking to make even more of a statement? Balenciaga and Balmain go bold. As does this joyful cobalt-blue pair by Karen Walker.

Chunky Angular
This playful take on a blocky square or rectangular silhouette looks good on pretty much everyone. Velvet Canyon does a set conjures up imagery of palm trees and fern fronds, while the gentle gradient and blush pink geometric outline of Rag & Bone’s Sadies lend a retro feel. This mint number from Aussie label AM brings in super-subtle curves to the style.

Right Round
This ’50s-era style suits most face shapes too, especially angular ones. Aussie label Status Anxiety’s Ascetic sunnies come in timeless shades of blond, tortoiseshell and black. Another local label, Good Citizens, is making pairs from single-use plastic bottles, like this aqua set. This update to the signature Karen Walker silhouette is biodegradable, made from wood pulp. Szade’s Lazenby combines coral-white frames with olive lenses. Maui Jim does an oversized rose-tinted teak, and Le Specs’ translucent gold pair is a good budget option.
