Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW) is back from October 21 to 27 for its 30th year. For this milestone, the annual fashion and creativity event will see 300 emerging and established designers exhibiting across 100-plus free and ticketed events – including runways, exhibitions, workshops and industry talks.
This year’s theme, “You’re Invited”, celebrates Melbourne’s distinctive fashion scene with all its individuality, community and self-expression. Because fashion isn’t just about the clothes we wear, but also the people who bring them to life, it’s fitting that musician G Flip, with their bold style and unapologetic individuality, is this year’s M/FW ambassador.
This year M/FW returns to some favourite runway locations from past years, like the historic Queen Victoria Market, M/FW’s original home at Melbourne Town Hall, cutting-edge The Lume Melbourne and Little Bourke Street.
Some of Australia’s most celebrated fashion designers and labels will show collections this year, including Aje, Alpha60, Bec & Bridge, Clothing the Gaps, Erik Yvon, Grace Lillian Lee, Injury, J’Aton, Maara Collective, Mariam Seddiq, Nevenka, Ngali, Oroton, Rebecca Vallance and Reigner.
The Volvo Electric Runway at Queen Victoria Market on October 23 will spotlight ageless power dressing and pioneering technology. The Refined Edit Runway at Melbourne Town Hall on October 26 will focus on elegance and craft. The Little Bourke Street Runway on October 24 is a free event turning the laneway into a runway. And the Fashion Capsules – celebrating their 10th anniversary – will once again feature curated exhibitions of creative works from local designers and artisans.
This year’s M/FW Conversations program covers the business of fashion and what an inclusive fashion future could look like. A participatory panel and workshop will provide insights into the industry’s evolving landscape, and will be particularly useful for aspiring designers and creatives.
A standout new feature is the RE:Fashion program, which will host a public pre-loved clothing market and workshops on sustainability and body positivity. It’s an opportunity for the public to learn more about fashion’s social impact – and possibly walk away with a pre-loved gem to add to your wardrobe.
The week ends with a grand closing showcase runway at Melbourne Town Hall that celebrates the past, present and future of M/FW. It will pay tribute to the city’s rich fashion legacy with current and archival pieces from 30 iconic designers, and a performance by G Flip.
M/FW is a carbon-neural event – $1 from every ticket goes to offsetting its carbon footprint. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for free cans of the new T2 Iced range at select runways and activations.
