Double Cleansing Is Out – Merit’s New Cleanser Does It All With a Single Formula

Ten-plus steps. Dozens of products. One cleanser to remove makeup, another to actually clean. When did skincare routines get so tedious?
But Merit – known for its five-minute makeup – has always done beauty differently. Now it’s applying that same less-is-more logic to skincare.
The label’s new Great Skin cleanser is designed to replace both steps of a typical double cleanse, with one formula that removes makeup, SPF and dirt without leaving skin feeling stripped of moisture.
“It has lightweight emollients to leave your skin feeling soft and PHAs for gentle daily exfoliation,” Merit’s CMO Aila Morin tells Broadsheet. “It’s pH balanced to support a healthy skin barrier – and has everything your skin needs, but nothing it doesn’t.
“I’ve been impressed with how it’s able to take off my full face [of makeup] after a day of meetings,” Morin says. “But more so that it hasn’t left my skin red, irritated or tight – it feels smooth and hydrated, which I’ve never felt before with a cleanser.”
To mark the launch, Merit has collaborated with antipodean towel label Baina on a limited-edition flannel set. It features Baina’s Lake House stripe in Merit’s signature cool-toned blue alongside a warm clay shade that mirrors the cleanser’s colour.
When it comes to cleansing, Baina co-founder Bailey Meredith says that face cloths “provide a deeper clean and also gently exfoliate the skin,” offering a softer alternative to harsher actives and scrubs.
Her advice for getting the most from yours? “Start by dampening the cloth with warm water to help open pores. Gently massage into skin using circular motions to lift impurities, reduce congestion and promote circulation. To finish, rinse with cool water to soothe. Refresh your cloth daily to support skin health.”
The Great Skin cleanser ($51) and towel set ($42) are available separately from August 12 via Merit’s website.
