There aren’t many garments that have become so widely loved that they’ve earned themselves an initialism. But little black dresses (LBDs) are one of them. There’s something powerful about LBDs that its wearers can testify to. They can stand out, blend in, be subversive or sweet. The only prerequisite is that it’s black, short and a dress. The rest is up to you.

Heading into the silly season, nine Australian stylists share their top picks. Here are the local labels and global brands that tick all the right boxes when it comes to LBDs.

Charlotte Stokes, Sydney stylist and creative consultant

“I love a black dress that feels flexible by day and elevated by night. Internationally, I’m drawn to Doen, the California-based brand known for its romantic, vintage-inspired pieces and conscious, female-led design. Their little black dresses often feature delicate smocking, puffed sleeves or subtle lace trims – feminine without feeling fussy. Whether it’s a puff-sleeve midi or tiered mini, they always feel timeless, wearable and beautifully put-together.

“Closer to home, I keep reaching for Posse, a local label celebrated for its effortless bohemian aesthetic and thoughtful design. Their black dresses offer flowing silhouettes, subtle textures and unique trims that feel comfortable and distinct – perfect for day-to-night versatility. Finally, Sheike delivers accessible drama with flattering cuts and bold silhouettes that feel tailored yet wearable, making them a go-to for versatile, elevated black dresses.”

Katherine Rose, Sydney stylist

“Personally, I can’t wear anything that doesn’t have an edge to it – I love subversive basics that have elements of asymmetry, cut-outs or a unique touch. For something casual, I love the Aiba draped cotton jersey long-sleeve dress from Christopher Esber. Everything this brand does is incredibly unique and years ahead. Camilla and Marc is also consistent in nailing a unique LBD.”

Liv Brown, Melbourne personal stylist

“Everyone needs a little black dress! I’ve had a vintage velvet one for years and I still love it; it’s timeless and always works. Right now, Hansen & Gretel have a beautiful strapless option with a bow detail on the back. The bow gives it that classic feel but also adds something unexpected and fun. For cool, wearable silhouettes, I love St Agni – they always manage to hit that sweet spot between minimal and interesting. Their dresses feel elevated without trying too hard. Sir also does beautiful LBDs with unique cuts and detailing that still feel timeless.”

Jana Bartolo, Sydney stylist

“For me, the perfect little black dress leans toward the avant-garde, something with unique structure and bold design. Some of my favourite brands that nail this are Ganni, Molly Goddard, and Noir Kei Ninomiya. Each brings a distinct creative edge, whether it’s Ganni’s playful modernity, Molly Goddard’s sculptural silhouettes, or Noir Kei Ninomiya’s intricate, innovative construction. These dresses don’t just blend into the background, they make a statement through shape, texture and detail.

“With a sweet ruffled hem and an open back tied with a bow, this Ganni dress design is both playful and versatile. The adjustable tie closure makes it easy to layer and dress up or down to suit the occasion. It’s finished with a cute front pocket, because who doesn’t love a pocket?”

Rochelle Renwick, Perth stylist and creative director

Van der Kooij has it in the bag. Their little dresses are so perfect; the cuts and silk fabrics are divine. The way the dresses fit and lay on a body is exquisite, and my biggest selling point is that they’re so versatile. The Ina for a forever piece. Or the Neve for a modern take. I love a dramatic sleeve.

“Effie Kats does sexy and chic so well! She always has something that you need to add to cart. The Orianna would be my pick – it’s effortless and chic. For my Perth girlies, Deconduarte are seriously shaking things up with their stunning made-to-order pieces. Designs can be custom-crafted just for you. Unique and intentional.”

Jade Leung, Melbourne stylist

“My go-to for the perfect LBD is Wardrobe NYC. This is my favourite piece; I’ve worn it to death. It’s a beautiful cut and is made from a very comfortable boucle ribbed-knit fabric, which makes it adaptable to all phases of the month. I love how forgiving and comfortable the cut, length and fabric is, while still being very chic and polished.”

Juvelle Behrendorff, Perth personal stylist

“The classic LBD is a reliable wardrobe staple for any event where you’re unsure what to wear. Australian label Courtney Zheng offers contemporary, high-quality options. The Duchesse mini works with sheer tights and pumps or with ballet flats and white socks. Or for something more statement, the Victoire dress would be perfect with its sculptural shoulders and elongated sleeves.

“If you prefer a style with movement, One Fell Swoop’s Harlequin dress, with its asymmetric shoulder detail and elegant draping, would make a versatile option. It would look great with strappy heels or minimal leather sandals. Lastly, for a wider size range, Mariam Seddiq offers stunning ready-to-wear styles in sizes 4 to 24. The Lucci blazer dress would suit those whose style naturally leans towards structured blazers and tailored trousers. It comes in both mini and midi lengths, proving an LBD doesn’t have to be short to be chic.”

Sally Mackinnon, Melbourne personal stylist

“For myself, I’d check out the likes of Bassike, Matteau or Toteme for something in a beautiful cotton that is understated but timeless. I’d look for something that I can wear beyond the warmer months for 80 per cent of my everyday lifestyle; you can read more about this 80/20 concept in my book Styled. This could be dressed up with a fabulous pair of heels and a clutch for a night out in Melbourne, layered over tights, boots and a turtleneck for work in winter, or dressed down with sandals and a straw bag on summer holidays. The slouch waist basketweave dress by Toteme is just beautiful and it encapsulates everything I personally love about a versatile black dress – it’s just not so little.”

Lana Wilkinson, Melbourne celebrity stylist and shoe designer

“I love everything Christopher Esber is creating at the moment, his little black dresses often feature intricate details or adornments. I also think Effie Kats and Henne nail easy LBDs that are fashionable, on trend and well-priced.”
