Following in the well-heeled footsteps of Aussie label Mara & Mine’s bespoke Zodiac slippers, Sunshine Coast jeweller Holly Ryan has embraced all things zodiac with her latest capsule collection, Line Saga x HR Zodiac.

The collaboration with designer and artist Line Arnesen features handmade pendant necklaces featuring all 12 zodiac signs in sterling silver, gold-plated silver and nine-carat gold. Each illustration is hand-drawn by Arnesen, then cast into metal using the lost-wax technique. This process, which dates back thousands of years to the Bronze Age, involves a wax model being pressed into the molten metal, imprinting the pendant before the wax is melted away to reveal the final product.

Ryan – who describes herself as a “textbook Scorpio” – says her zodiac range isn’t fad-driven and that she has “always been inspired by the deeper meaning and mysteries of the zodiac”, though she doesn’t always agree with her horoscopes.

Her jewellery journey began with her parents studying silversmithing in Taxco, Mexico (“so I guess you could say jewellery design was always in my blood”), and she’s also an accomplished sculptor. Ryan got into sculpting out of necessity, when she started crafting abstract sandstone busts and bodies so she could display her jewellery for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

But fashion was her original dream. She studied fashion design at Queensland University of Technology, but decided to make jewellery because it had a much smaller environmental impact than making clothes. She launched her eponymous label in 2010 with the help of her mother, Denise.

Nine years later, the full range includes earrings, necklaces, bangles and rings incorporating gold, silver, keshi pearls and Baltic amber – all made-to-order. She also creates sandals, belts and hair accessories, and collaborated with Pared Eyewear on a line of sunglasses. And she has a collaboration with Neuw Denim debuting in September.

Holly Ryan’s Sydney and Sunshine Coast studios only use recycled metal. The label has an in-house repair service and the option to return pre-loved pieces in exchange for a store credit or a redesign, so nothing goes to waste.
