After six years leading Harper’s Bazaar Australia, Kellie Hush stepped down as editor-in-chief in August 2018 to launch a fashion label of her own. The Way is her response to a decade of learning and analysis about what Australian women want when it comes to fashion: a one-stop online shop for quality, affordable bags and jewellery. According to Hush, it’s the easiest way to snag a fashion pick-me-up – and the most cost-effective.
“What excites me is bringing great style to the women that can’t afford a Louis Vuitton bag,” says Hush of her accessories, all priced under $100 and inspired by runway looks around the world.
And so, here are her tips on the best places to source accessories for under $100 – including some personal favourites.
Invest in neutrals
“If you think you’re going to wear something a lot and want it to last a few seasons, then invest in a classic piece in a classic colour,” says Hush. There’s a reason why black and tan accessories are highly sought after – they can elevate a look without being too loud, and they have style longevity season after season. “You’re never going regret buying a pair of black boots, a black belt, camel scarf or tote bag,” she says, adding that neutrals also create a blank canvas for pops of colour and personality from more affordable accessories such as these animal-print ankle boots ($99).
Buy items that serve two purposes
According to Hush, it’s important to be savvy when shopping on a budget and buy items that maximise functionality. “Look for crossbody bags ($79) that have a detachable strap, that way you can use it during the day and transform it into a clutch at night,” she suggests. She’s also keen on investing in decent scarves, which are a versatile accessory in winter. Hush suggests this textured Country Road scarf ($99.95) to keep you warm and break up colour – plus it travels well. “You can snuggle up in it on a flight or on a road trip.”
Build a collection of “occasion” bags
“I carry a large tote to work, have a few cute evening bags and wear a lot of crossbody bags,” says Hush of her collection, which has been carefully built over the years. “I have a crossbody for kids sport and one for shopping and I don’t mind if they get knocked about a bit. Then I have ‘special bags’ that will never see a soccer pitch.” Hush adds it’s also important to make sure your purchases are practical. “So many times, I’ve bought a travel bag and had to carry an extra bag to put my shoes in. Defeats the purpose if it’s not big enough to carry a weekend wardrobe – shoes included.” So Hush and her team designed a generous-sized weekender ($84) to fit it all.
Sunnies in winter
“Always buy a fun pair of sunglasses in winter,” says Hush. “Seriously, they will cheer you up.” Her pick? These caramel-tan tinted ’90s-style frames from Le Specs ($59.95).
Where to shop
The Way features a collection of 167 bags and 510 jewellery products, which range in price from $12 earrings and cocktail rings to $99 totes. Shop everything from these black drop earrings ($19.99) to this soft clutch with detachable straps ($59.99). Other retailers with Hush’s tick of approval that sell affordable accessories include Zara for new-season colour shoes; Witchery for a classic range of belts, jewellery and shoes; and LeSpecs, Minkpink and Sunglass Hut for a great range of sunnies.
