“Even when you look after yourself, everything really comes into question when you become ill,” Three Warriors founder Corbin Halliday tells Broadsheet.
In 2014 he was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), the result of unwitting exposure to mycotoxins from black mould. It led to serious health complications, chronic migraines, high blood pressure and nerve pains, but also brought Halliday clarity.
“I looked at all of my products and realised there was a shortage in the market for organic and toxic-free skincare and self-tanning, which I love, love doing,” he says. “I live in Tasmania and there’s no sun here, and I’m really pale with red hair so I’d just burn and freckle.”
That’s how his certified-organic self-tanning brand was born. Halliday spent two years on research and formulation, finding plant-derived ingredients to replace the artificial components found in most tanning products. He sources spring water, Flinders Island olive oil, chamomile and more from across the state.
The flagship product is a buildable and hydrating self-tanning mousse that suits all skin tones and provides an instant bronze glow. It’s best applied with a velour tanning mitt to ensure zero streakiness.
There’s also a moisturiser-like gradual tan, that lets you build a deeper colour over time and also works as skincare, while the vegan face tanning mist can be used as either a toner or makeup setting spray, allowing you to spritz and tan while on the go.
Three Warriors recommends exfoliating pre-tan for the best results, and its own sand scrub sloughs away dead skin cells without irritating the healthy skin underneath. It’s made from finely shaved walnut shells, white sand sourced from Tasmania’s Bay of Fires, plus aloe vera, Manuka honey and coconut oil.
Three Warriors has been certified organic by the Organic Food Chain, meaning at least 70 per cent of ingredients are organic and the rest is all natural. The products have also been certified as toxic-free by Safe Cosmetics Australia council, are not tested on animals, and are 100 per cent vegan.
“People are becoming more aware of cleaner skincare and we’re promoting a healthy glow, staying out of the sun, and reading the back of the label before putting anything on your skin so you know what you’re putting into it,” Halliday says.
