Summer and sandals go hand-in-hand, but shopping for them can feel overwhelming – there’s an ocean of strappy leather and chunky platforms to wade through online. To fast-track the discovery process, we’ve rounded up the top trends for summer.
The chunky sandal trend is sticking around for summer ’20/’21 – this Valentino style will add edge to any slip dress, while The Row’s hook and loop sandal is a little more understated. The Birkenstock collab with Net-A-Porter is a more fashion-y take on the classic Birk style. These Aere crossover leather slides look way pricier than their $129 pricepoint, and these Billini two-strap sandals come in at under $100.
Strappy leather sandals never go out of style, but this year look for toe loop details and some complexity. These A Emery sandals are fancy enough for work, thanks to the deep maroon shade. Who What Wear’s leather thongs are an upgrade on your old rubber mainstays. In the under $100 department, Atmos & Here’s Rita sandals are a great choice. If you’re more of a tan fan, this strappy Iris & Ink pair could be a goer. For those who like the look and feel of ankle straps, ATP Atelier’s Alezio sandals (49 per cent off at time of publication) will let you go as gladiator as you like – tie them at your ankle or higher up your calf.
Often paired with the chunky trend, Velcro straps are having a moment, giving sandals a real ’90s edge. These Dazie two-strap sandals keep things minimalist, while this James Smith version is a bit chunkier. Asos is playing in the Teva space with these sporty sandals, although the original Teva Midform still does sport-sandals best.
You can still rep some Adidas slides this summer, but minimalism is creeping into the scene and plenty of labels are now doing leather slides or the original rubber trend – just less sporty. These Assembly Label slides are the best of both worlds, combining leather but with a sporty profile. Aje is doing a more feminine version with its Stream slide; St Agni is also working with leather, the Gulliver slide is perfect for workwear. Asos is doing classic pool slides in a neutral beige hue (and for just $20); and Rip Curl’s created a hybrid of a bohemian leather sandal with a Birkenstock-esque platform.
We’re talking fancy thongs. Yep, the ’90s trend is well and truly back this summer, pairing perfectly with slip skirts and strappy dresses. Go pastel with these Therapy thongs, or neutral with this Senso option. LMS has made The Jacqui, which has a very Posh Spice vibe with a full platform. Want to go a little less Posh? These Aere thongs are midform, so a little less out there. And it doesn’t get more minimalist than this style by Tkees, which comes in a range of neutral colours. But if you’re wanting a truly glam pair, The Row’s done some in black velvet.
