Have a friend who seems to talk a lot about ‘essence’? To help you talk the talk and gift the perfect gift, in partnership with Hunter Lab, co-founder and skincare expert Susie Cox shares five inspired Christmas gift ideas for the beauty minded.

If you feel like Christmas is coming early this year, you’re not alone. Susie Cox, who founded natural skincare company Hunter Lab with her husband Elliot Waldron, is ready to go into “full festive mode” this Christmas after spending much of 2021 in Melbourne’s lockdown. “I feel like it’s Christmas now,” she says. “There’s that buzz in the air.”

Susie and Elliot, who have family in Sydney too, have two young children: Louie, 2, and six-month-old Freddie, who have spent the year apart from grandparents and aunties and uncles. “We’re so excited to have everyone back around the dining table,” says Cox. “We can’t wait to break bread with family again and enjoy special moments missed this year.”

Christmas is a significant time of year at Hunter Lab, too. “Holidays have been a big part of the Hunter Lab architecture – it’s our favourite time of year,” she says, adding that the art of gifting inspired the brand’s creation in the first place. “We wanted to gift the people in our lives products we love that they would be proud to use and delighted to receive.”

To help you sort your Christmas shopping early this year, Cox shares five failsafe gift ideas for the skincare fanatic in your life.

A cleansing mask
In 2021, everyone needs a little self-care. A nourishing or purifying mask – whether mud, sheet or jelly – is the perfect prompt for your loved one to set aside some much-needed time to unwind.

As a mother of two small children, Cox knows how difficult it can be to find time to go out for a facial. “Gifting someone a mud mask is the perfect treat for them to enjoy the home spa experience and be left with the most incredibly soft, nourished skin,” she says.

Cleansing oil
Nothing feels more luxe than using a facial cleansing oil. Hunter Lab’s newly launched Lipid Vitamin Cleansing Oil was born out of a desire to “elevate the cleansing ritual,” says Cox. The result is a high-performance product featuring 10 all-natural oils that cleanse and hydrate the skin. “It melts away makeup, sunscreen and impurities such as pollution, and excess sebum,” she adds. Suitable for all skin types and sporting a gender-inclusive design, this cleansing oil serves as an ideal gift for “everyone on your list.”

Hand and body wash
Thanks to Covid, we’ve never spent so much time washing our hands. While this uptick in personal hygiene can only be a good thing – goodbye gastro – it has left us hankering for deliciously scented handwash products that are kind to the skin. As such, a luxurious handwash makes a Covid-safe gift that manages to be both thoughtful and practical. “If you go to someone’s house, rather than taking a traditional bunch of flowers, it’s lovely to gift the host a beautiful hand and body wash that they can put on their kitchen bench or in their bathroom,” Cox says.

Body scrub
Hunter Lab’s Pinot Grape Skin Body Scrub begins life at Willow Creek Vineyard, an 11-hectare plot of Mornington Peninsula vines which includes the luxurious Jackalope Hotel and provides Hunter Lab with excess grapes. “We grind them, blend them and turn them into an incredible body scrub,” says Cox. “It’s crafted with sea salt and antioxidant-rich grape skins and eliminates dead skin build-up and helps improve blood circulation.” With aloe vera, grapeseed oil and coconut oil, the scrub also nourishes and hydrates.

The ideal recipient for the scrub is anyone in your life craving to get out and about these summer holidays and show off “perfect soft, glowy skin,” she says.

A luxurious kit
Hunter Lab’s Ultra Glow Kit perfectly encapsulates the brand’s Christmas theme: the gift of ritual. Comprising three of the most luxurious Hunter Lab products – Lipid Vitamin Cleansing Oil, Marine Healing Essence and Lipid Vitamin Face Oil – it’s housed in a beautiful black leather drawstring bag. “It’s an incredibly luxe kit and the perfect way to indulge a loved one,” Cox says.
