Uh-oh – my seasonal amnesia is back. What does one wear in colder weather, again? The temperature isn’t quite ready for chunky knits, but a lightweight skivvy isn’t cutting it either.

Fortunately, our editors have been doing the hard work. This month, it’s all about filling wardrobe gaps with pieces that solve the in-between: basics and layering staples that flex with the forecast, accessories built for colour play, and the footwear obsessions already earning compliments. Here’s everything we’re adding to cart for stylish autumn days ahead.

Evie Baker, photo editor

I love lace, and Kat The Label’s Annie shorts are the texture play I’ve been waiting for – I can’t wait to style them with something slightly sheer, then throw St Agni’s funnel-neck jacket over the top now that it’s (finally) available in black.

From there, the wishlist gets practical. Venroy’s cotton tee is a layering non-negotiable, Neuw’s vintage-wash bootcuts are the answer to my eternal denim hunt, and after spotting Hailey Bieber in Reformation’s patent pumps, I just know they’ll make anything I throw on feel instantly cooler – especially paired with Szade’s Farrow frames.

The final addition is a new one: Glossier’s You Soie perfume. I’ve been loyal to the original You for years, but this might be my new favourite – rice milk, jasmine and ambrox make for a scent that lingers differently on everyone. I spray it on my clothes and hair to make it last. Consider it the finishing touch.

Like a lot of people lately, I’ve fallen hard for Auralee. The Japanese label makes some of the best staples around, and this red zip-up hoodie is exactly what I’ll be reaching for as the colder weather sets in. It’ll layer nicely over Bassike’s deep blue tee, and while I’m updating basics, this red Wales Bonner style is for louder days – clearly, the wishlist has a type.

From the wardrobe to the shoe rack: suede, Saint Laurent, dark chocolate – what more is there to say? These loafers are about to grace my feet while simultaneously breaking my bank. And while I keep telling myself I’m done buying sneakers, these Dries Van Noten trainers in tan suede feel like the perfect final pick. Famous last words, et cetera.

I’m a sucker for the colder months, mostly thanks to my winter wardrobe – which got a major upgrade during a visit to Japan earlier this year. Now I’m filling gaps and, since oversized sunglasses are having a moment, the Prada aviators feel like the best place to begin. Colour is a close second, though: I say every season I want more of it, and this time accessories are the way in. Pink knee-high socks make a playful pick, especially paired with Miista’s Loda ballerinas that have been on my radar for far too long.

On the clothing front, I’m eyeing the basics. Buddy’s hemp tee is my answer to the perfect long sleeve, and Paloma Wool’s stripey knit has endless styling cred – worn alone, over a tee or tucked under a coat when it really cools down. And if I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll sling a Dinosaur Designs bangle over the sleeve. Finally, I’m putting pants in the back seat this season and letting All Is A Gentle Spring’s bubble-hem skirt take the wheel. She’s classic, versatile and I’m about to wear her everywhere.

Finding jeans that work dressed up or down is harder than it should be, but Wynn Hamlyn’s classic cut strikes that balance. The New Zealand brand is going on hiatus soon, so I’m stocking up on the twisted pocket shirt while I can. It’s quickly becoming tracksuit weather too, which has me looking at the Uniqlo x Needles collab (I recommend sizing up – lean into the bagginess Needles is known for) and Paire’s organic cotton trackpants: comfortable enough to live in, discreet enough to leave the house in.

On footwear, as usual, I’m torn. Oxford’s suede sneakers scratch a similar itch to Margiela’s Army trainers for an everyday option – but it might finally be time to invest properly. Our Legacy’s Camion boots are calling, and I’m running out of reasons to say no.

Simone Richardson, shopping editor

Another week, another vintage item I’m wildly optimistic I’ll hunt down. One miss I’m coming to terms with? This zippy Jil Sander bag. One win I’m stoked about? This ever-chic Issey Miyake frock. It’ll make its solo debut at my birthday in London paired with these Nelson Made mules, with a Melbourne winter encore to follow, thanks to endless styling-over-pants potential.

I’m generally not so lucky with IRL vintage finds, but last week I was blessed with the most insane chocolate leather trench (similar to this Prada style). The smallest shift from black to brown has lit a new appetite for colour play – and I’m looking to Paloma Wool’s mustard belt, Flore Flore’s chartreuse v-neck and Bassike’s plum pants to sprinkle through my neutral wardrobe. Naturally, the Jil Sander shopper sits on that list too (*the search continues*). Until then, old habits die hard and Merrma’s perforated tote makes a stylish case for going back to black.

My current mood board is a mix of high-low styling: refined basics made for layering, paired with thoughtful accessories that make me feel instantly put together. With its sharp collar, the Flore Flore Diana polo is the ultimate layering hero, while the Fruity Booty V-neck in baby pink adds a soft pop of colour. I’m styling both with the Posse Angelina capris (and hoping we get a few more mild days before winter really sets in).

On the accessories front, I’ve been reaching for my triangular scarf that I picked up in London last year – Cos does a similar one in cashmere. And I’m waiting (impatiently) for a restock of the Plasticana Gardana clogs, which are essentially the cooler, less-clunky version of a gumboot. To round things out, I’ve added the molten Simuero Faro ring for some texture, and Keep Cup’s new Ora bottle in Orchid, because an outfit’s not complete without a chic water bottle.

It’s officially cosy-weather season – cue trackpants and cardigans on high rotation. My tired trackie daks have seen better days, and wide-leg silhouettes are firmly the way to go now (how did we ever tolerate a cuffed ankle?). Paire’s merino-wool trousers are top of my list, with this relaxed grey style from Bassike a close second. I’ll wear them both with a soft cashmere cardi from Venroy.

On the slightly more polished side, I haven’t stopped thinking about these paperbag Venroy pants I spotted a few months ago. The grey is currently sold out, but I’m holding out hope. In the meantime, I’ve been fixating on a pair of Wales Bonner loafers. The tailoring, the detail – no notes. They’re firmly in wishlist territory, so I’m considering a snake-print Alias Mae pair as a more immediate option. Last on the list: this suede Shona Joy jacket. It’s got all of autumn’s top trends going for it: a high funnel neck, a rich chocolate tone and a slouchy fit.

Actually, one more thing. I recently came across Syrup, a Melbourne-based intimates label known for delicate lace bras and underwear. This set is sitting in my cart. Okay, that’s all.

April is when your wardrobe starts to show its gaps. Summer pieces no longer cut it, but it’s not quite coat weather either – which is why Friends With Frank’s chocolate trench has been on my mind. It hits that seasonal sweet spot, and now that it’s restocked, it feels like a sign. First layer: Niamh Galea’s Twist dress, worn solo, over pants or straight under the new trench.

As much as I love neutrals in autumn, I still need a pop of colour – and this bubblegum pink duffel adds just enough disruption. I refuse to let the weather stop me from wearing a kitten heel, and Camper’s Kobarah style has been on my list for years (an easy match for the bag). For accessories, Nina Gordon’s puff ring goes straight onto the stack and Lexxola’s frames deliver that oversized, slightly anonymous vibe I’m after. And because I can’t help myself, Puma’s ’90s-style ballet flats are already in my cart – consider them bought.

Maggie Zhou, fashion editor-at-large

I recently tried on this Viktoria & Woods Luna skivvy in-store. Its long-line body, extended sleeves and high neck were crafted from garnet-toned lace fabric, making it feel subtly sexy. I can imagine wearing it with these Anna Rossi bangles and these Dinosaur Designs Boulder bangles stacked up to my elbows. I love a deep plum colour paired with a warm baby blue, so these Camper ballet flats are calling my name. And as I associate autumn with plaid, The Social Studio’s Collingwood-made Yoke skirt and Apres Studio’s Plaid Market top are looking pretty sweet right now.
