During her six decades in the industry, legendary German fashion designer Jil Sander has built her name on turning simple, everyday wardrobe staples like white shirts and black cigarette trousers into something of an artform – the kind of minimalist clothes that make you want to dress exclusively in black, white, and navy, every day.

So it was perhaps no surprise that in 2009 Ms. Sander chose to collaborate with Uniqlo, the Japanese high street brand that embraces a similar sense of aesthetic discretion. Uniqlo’s best-selling products are their affordable cashmere sweaters—most often in Sander-esque shades of navy and beige—as well as trench coats, puffer jackets, and simple woollen slacks. So it was little surprise the collaboration, dubbed +J, quickly developed a legion of devoted fans.

Fans of the union will be thrilled to learn the latest +J collection will launch in Australia on May 6. “I set out to define the global modern uniform with this in mind: clothes should be long lasting and enduring,” said Sander of the collaboration in a press release. “They should serve the wearer and give her or him the energy and self-assurance which is so much needed in our global reality.”

We picked five standouts from the collection that come in both the ladies and mens +J range. The new range is released May 6th.

Supima stand collar L/S shirt

Few wardrobe staples are as versatile or timeless as a crisp white shirt. And while main line Jil Sander shirting retails for upwards of $1,000 a piece, this Uniqlo iteration sits at a deliciously affordable $59.

Merino blend turtleneck L/S sweater
Long live the turtleneck. Made with a soft merino wool blend and available in five moody dark shades (navy, black, grey, brown, and plum), +J’s turtleneck sweaters are the backbone of many a working wardrobe.

Hybrid down coat
In recent times the fashion industry has fallen back in love with the oversized puffer jacket, thanks to its practicality and undeniable good looks. This full-length down jacket is a smart investment for the impending Australian winter—particularly in a perennially chic shade of charcoal.

Leather rope belt
One of the few trend pieces in the Jil Sander repertoire, this woven waist belt is a sensible accompaniment to billowing shirt dresses, or to loop through loose-fitting paperbag trousers.

Wool blend relax tapered pants
A lesser known sartorial maxim: you can never have enough pairs of perfectly-fitting tapered pants. Stock up on these impeccably tailored trousers—the durable wool blend will see you through many an icy day.

The full +J range is released May 6.
