As shoppers, we’ve become quite accustomed to sales. Email subscriber discount codes and birthday coupons have grown to be part of the shopping process, but Black Friday still tops the charts when it comes to generous sales.

At its best, Black Friday is a chance to snap up the items that have been sitting on a wishlist, a time to invest in pieces you’ll cherish for years to come. It’s easy to get swept up in the hype of the sales period, so we’re taking note of what Australian stylists are buying during Black Friday.

Juvelle Behrendorff, Perth personal stylist

“As a stylist, I think Black Friday sales are the perfect moment to fill any gaps in your wardrobe or finally pick up those statement or wishlist pieces in a more budget-friendly way. The Maeve maxi dress in chocolate by Wynn Hamlyn is my standout pick. Chocolate brown is easier to style than black and this would be my version of the LBD, perfect for cocktail parties, fancy date nights or even weddings with bold gold accessories.

Ma-jr’s Amelie shirt is another favourite. Its elongated ’70s-inspired collar and cuffs give it a refined edge, and the powder blue is the ideal non-neutral neutral. Swap it in for your usual white shirt and your outfits will instantly feel fresher and more elevated.

Polka dots are having a moment (which I love) but they’re also timeless. The Romy Amelie skirt would be great for a Christmas party with a silk cami or the matching Aimee bustier, or keep it relaxed with an oversized white tee and minimal leather sandals for summer drinks.

My final pick is a little unexpected: Made by Fressko reusable coffee cups. Not technically fashion, but I almost always have one in hand, so really it is an extension of my outfit, like any good accessory. The rouge colourway would be perfect for summer.”

Liv Brown, Melbourne personal stylist

“I love using Two Broke Chicks’ cheat sheet every Black Friday. At this point, it’s basically saving money, right? This year, I’m focusing on Christmas presents and some fresh summer outfits for myself.

I’ve had my eye on a few Damson Madder pieces from The Iconic, and I am waiting patiently for their 50 per cent off women’s fashion to drop. This blouse for Christmas Day? Say no more. I’m thinking of wearing it with a miniskirt and high socks, but it would also be so cute with denim.

The Wolf Gang has up to 70 per cent off, so I’m thinking of wearing this necklace with a plain white tee over summer – a little statement moment to elevate the basics. Cendre is always my go-to for Kris Kringle gifts. Its Genevieve necklace is calling my name.

And lastly, is it even Christmas if I don’t buy myself a new pair of sunglasses? Sunglass Hut has the Miu Miu pair I’m obsessed with, so please cross your fingers that they go on sale. I will live in these all summer long.”

Joshua Austin, Melbourne stylist and creative director

“I could not be more ready for the cold to go and summer to be full of colour, sun and saltwater! So Black Friday is all about getting summer vibes started. First new grab for the season is always a new swim brief, and I’m loving Gali Swimwear right now. It’s 100 per cent Aboriginal-owned and is designed in collaboration with First Nations artists. I’m into the Buligaa fit, it has shorter sides and shows a little more skin.

I cannot survive summer without 147 pairs of sunnies, and my current go-to brand is Szade. Designed in Melbourne, it makes cool frame shapes in many colours. My eyes are on the Lexen, they’re very much giving 2000s beach club.

Black Friday is always a time I try and hit up jewellery brands, and one I am obsessed with is TwoJeys. The Spanish jewellery label serves cowboy-lying-poolside-in-Palm-Springs energy. I have its Melted Stars necklace in my cart, ready for the sale.”

Holly Karas, Melbourne stylist

“This Porter James Sports Workers jacket is the perfect piece to carry you through the uncertain Melbourne weather at this time of year. The boxy cut works so well across seasons – it’s the perfect light layer. I love the olive green colour; it’s surprisingly easy to work into your existing wardrobe and much more interesting than a safer black or white choice.

I am a big fan of wearing pants year-round, and these Alpha60 Mia pleat pants are a great way to look put-together while feeling as comfortable as tracksuit pants. The split at the bottom makes for fun styling opportunities with footwear. I’d wear these with a boxy T-shirt, or low-waisted with a fitted tank.

I have been obsessed with Mollini ever since I got a pair of leather Tabi ballet flats for $129 from them. These Febbe suede wedges will be the next addition to my shoe collection. Knowing the brand, they will be as comfortable as they are stylish. I’m calling it: wearing heels casually will be happening this summer.”
