Chunky details, slim-fit ribbed knits and fluffy finishes define this season’s most-wanted cardis. Add a pop of red to your outfits, or layer up with softer shades like mushroom and sage.

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s knitwear season. Oversized sweaters and chunky hoodies are back in rotation, but sometimes you want a layer that feels a little more put-together – something to throw on for the office or button up for dinner. That’s where cardigans come in.

Wear one over a long-sleeve top (or a matching knit cami), looped around your neck like a scarf, or even styled back-to-front. It’s the moment for wool, cashmere, mohair and cotton cover-ups – and some of our favourite knitwear brands are delivering maximum cosiness this season. Here are 15 to add to your winter wardrobe.

Kowtow Composure cardigan

$259
Kowtow Composure cardigan
This style is a Kowtow signature. The ballet-wrap design means you can cinch it at the waist for cosy layering over dresses, but it also pairs well with a tee and jeans. It’s made from 100 per cent organic cotton and comes in five shades: classic black and white, plus seasonal hues like clay, dark spice and mahogany.

Sir the Label Ayana gathered cardigan

$390
Sir the Label Ayana gathered cardigan
Plum might just be the colour of the season – and Sir’s cardi is full of it. The local label’s take is woven from 100 per cent wool and cut into a sculptural silhouette. Cardigans have a daytime reputation, but this style’s elongated sleeves and gathered waist give it after-dark appeal.

MKDT Studio Thilda merino cardigan

$615
MKDT Studio Thilda merino cardigan
Riise, our favourite sustainable fashion marketplace, now stocks several new Danish labels. This minimalist knit has a softly draped silhouette that layers well over shirting, but also looks très chic on its own. It’s made from 100 per cent merino wool in a warm taupe that’ll go with everything.

Friends With Frank The Chloe cardigan

$349
Friends With Frank The Chloe cardigan
Red rules. Break the neutral rut of a winter wardrobe and inject a pop of colour into your everyday outfits. This style is a forever piece, made from 100 per cent merino wool with a timeless crew-neck cut. Whether dark or light denim has your heart, this styles with both.

Francie Fleur cardigan

$375
Francie Fleur cardigan
A Francie knit is for life. This Italian mohair piece is made in the label’s ethically certified factory in Melbourne and, like all Francie designs, it comes with extra yarn and a spare button (should you need it). Plus, the brand offers repair services at its design studio.

Deiji Studios belted cardi

$379
Deiji Studios belted cardi
Winter means not always wearing waist-level knits. Deiji Studios’ style is cut slightly longer for a cosy wrap you can cocoon yourself in. It’s belted, so you can cinch it in or leave it loose for a more relaxed fit. The Byron Bay label designs this piece in a deep navy or warm chocolate that’ll add a muted hit of colour to your wardrobe.

Alpha60 Sedona knit cardi

$144
Alpha60 Sedona knit cardi
Alpha60’s style adds something different to rug up in. It’s woven from fine merino wool for a lightweight ribbed texture that hugs your silhouette. Buttons follow up into the funnel neck for a fresh take on a classic cardigan. Black is timeless, but you can opt for chartreuse stripe for a statement.

Elka Collective Saschia knit cardigan

$249
Elka Collective Saschia knit cardigan
Every capsule wardrobe needs a tonal layering piece. Elka Collective’s cardi is made from a merino wool blend and comes in chocolate, grey marle or white marle. Style it over a long-sleeve top or throw it around your neck as a faux scarf.

Frisson Knits Minnie cardigan

$458
Frisson Knits Minnie cardigan
Each chilly season, Frisson Knits’ covetable designs dominate the scene. Alongside its collection of hand-knitted sweaters come its hand-knitted cardigans. This cropped style is made from a wool and alpaca blend that’s incredibly soft on skin – and offers an almost bolero look for layering over tops and dresses, or wearing solo on your braver days.

Alemais Elia Mulberry cropped cardigan

$390
Alemais Elia Mulberry cropped cardigan
Alemais is known for its ethereal, feminine take on fashion and this season’s cardi delivers just that. It’s crafted from a mohair, wool and alpaca blend and finished with sweet little pale pink pompoms that pop on its mulberry canvas. This one’s for maximalists – luckily we’re entering a renaissance.

EM on Holiday chunky knit cardigan

$295
EM on Holiday chunky knit cardigan
Resortwear, but make it winter. The Sydney label puts its trademark hibiscus on three colourways of cardigans – this neutral sand with splashes of red gets our pick. It’s handmade from an alpaca and wool blend for cosy layering that’ll last for many seasons to come.

Oroton cashmere blend cardigan

$369
Oroton cashmere blend cardigan
Oroton’s textural fluffy finish screams cosy. It’s made with a luxe cashmere and merino wool blend and adorned with monochrome buttons that blend in. Take styling cues from the Aussie label and layer the dark putty design over pale blue shirting – or shop it in sherbet for a creamy alternative.

Blanca Marlo cardigan

$280
Blanca Marlo cardigan
This rich caramel hue will go with everything. But it also comes in navy and purple, if you’re looking to dial up the colour. This wool-blend style is a more relaxed, looser-fitting cardigan than some of the others in this list. Blanca’s plush knitwear is for comfort that still looks considered.

Ganni Burgundy Check cardigan

$483.44 - $675
Ganni Burgundy Check cardigan
Danish cool-girl label Ganni brings a nostalgic cardi into the mix. Following the “countryside core” trend in the northern hemisphere’s winter , it’s only natural that Australia gets a hit of this during our own. This style features a chequered design that feels adjacent to plaid, tartan and fair isle, and its cashmere-wool blend promises to keep you toasty.

Wynn Hamlyn fluffy mohair cardigan

$495
Wynn Hamlyn fluffy mohair cardigan
Nothing says cosy cardi like mohair. The New Zealand label blends the fibre with wool and nylon to keep things warm but lightweight. It’s designed to feel soft on skin and slip easily into your wardrobe as a versatile styling piece. Layer it over crisp shirting and slacks, or a simple tee and jeans.
