Where Stylists Shop: The Best White T-Shirts To Add to Your Wardrobe Rotation

A seamless wardrobe is made up of hardworking pieces. And what’s more versatile than a plain white tee? We believe a classic T-shirt takes top spot when it comes to the ultimate closet staple.

For something as well-worn and widely loved as a white T-shirt, finding the perfect one proves to be a near impossible task. A white T-shirt makes for a classic, trans-seasonal outfit foundation; it’s an undisputed wardrobe essential for a reason. But what brands are making white T-shirts that tick all the boxes? Preferences for style, cuts and fabric vary, so we tapped our favourite Australian stylists to share their top picks with us.

Jade Leung, Melbourne stylist

“The best classic white T-shirt I own is from Kowtow. I like the cut of the men’s Staple Tee in a medium. It’s made from the most beautiful cotton that is super soft. They’re also completely plastic-free and made from Fairtrade-certified cotton.”

Elliot Garnaut, Melbourne stylist and commentator

“I love an AS Colour T-shirt as I love how thin their necklines are, as well as their length for tucking in. For something a little more robust and in a more contemporary silhouette, Sener Besim.”

Sally MacKinnon, Melbourne personal stylist

“I love my Bassike organic cotton jersey T-shirts made locally in Melbourne. You always get something unique with Bassike, be it the cut, sleeve or neckline – and the organic cotton is super comfortable.”

Stuart Walford, Melbourne stylist and creative producer

“I get asked this question a lot and the truth is, the answer varies from season to season, so it's good to shop around and see how the stores have updated the classic. I go through basics pretty quickly… so I don’t like to spend a fortune on something that I need to replace several times throughout the year.

For me, what makes a great basic T-shirt is a good boxy silhouette with fabric that isn’t too thin. I love a thicker neck binding, I feel like this makes the T-shirt feel more premium. For a tried and tested option, you can always count on Uniqlo to deliver consistent quality – the Airism T-shirt is a great steal for $24.90. For a premium option, Acne Studio’s oversized logo T-shirt is supreme, but at $420, I wear it very thoughtfully. Other places on the list would be Bassike, Jac & Jack and Venroy.”

Karinda Mutabazi, Melbourne stylist and creative director

“E Nolan has released the best classic white tee, [designer] Em’s attention to detail is second to none. Others worth mentioning are Bassike for interesting details and Uniqlo for cost-effective and good variation of shapes.

Jenna Flood, Melbourne slow fashion stylist

“My fave classic white tee is actually from Don Quijote, a giant discount store in Japan! But I do have a fantastic black tee (that I will eventually purchase in white) from Etiko. It's the perfect fit, 100 per cent organic cotton and not too heavy.”

Jam Baylon, Melbourne stylist and creative director

“A classic tee with a touch of unique detail is the Pivot Tee from local brand Not Sew New. The tees are upcycled from deadstock tees. My other go-to basic white tees are from Homie and AS Colour.”

Holly Karas, Melbourne stylist

“My everyday T-shirt is the Sia Tee from Neuw Denim – it is the perfect slightly boxy and cropped fit for someone with a short torso like myself!”
