Chunky soles had their run, now slim silhouettes are taking the lead. From local kicks by A Emery and Song for the Mute to pairs from abroad that are pushing the silhouette forward, these are the sneakers worth investing in this season.

The loudest shoe has ruled for a while now. Dad sneakers, exaggerated soles and bold block-colour panels have made footwear heavier, chunkier and harder to ignore. But lately, something’s changed.

A wave of nostalgia for late ’70s and ’80s running culture has crept into fashion, bringing with it a return to something lower, slimmer and altogether quieter. Archival reissues are being dug up, and new releases are following suit – proof that slim is the new chunky.

While maximalist sneakers still have their moments, they tend to work best with bigger, bolder proportions – think oversized denim or baggy cargos – which can limit their styling potential. The slender sneaker, by contrast, has a softer silhouette that lends itself to versatility, slipping just as easily under a pleated maxi skirt as loose-fitting pants.

Beyond styling ease, there’s a material shift too. Soft suede and breathable mesh keep things light and true to the trend’s athletic roots, while newer luxury riffs push the silhouette forward with sleeker soles and unexpected colour combinations.

Whatever your shoedrobe is calling for, these are the sought-after kicks worth lacing up this season – and 12 of them are currently on sale.
