Clean beauty is no longer niche. Once shorthand for farmers market balms, Byron-based apothecaries and an affinity with Gwyneth Paltrow, it now sits firmly in the mainstream.

And it isn’t just a fad. According to industry forecasts, Australia’s natural beauty market is projected to almost triple in value by 2030 compared to 2023 – and antiperspirant is one personal-care product leading the way.

For years, the daily underarm swipe barely registered. A quick spritz or roll of antiperspirant meant getting through long workdays and gym sessions without having to worry about odour. But as interest in clean ingredients grows, aluminium – the active ingredient that prevents sweat – has become increasingly scrutinised.

What’s the difference between antiperspirant, deodorant and natural deodorant?

Antiperspirants work by using aluminium salts to form gel-like plugs in sweat ducts, reducing moisture. While no conclusive evidence has linked them to serious health conditions, research into long-term use continues – and for many, that’s reason enough to explore alternatives.

Deodorants take a different approach. Instead of blocking sweat, they neutralise odour-causing bacteria and absorb moisture. Natural deodorants go a step further, doing this with plant-based ingredients and “without aluminium, synthetic chemicals, phthalates, parabens or forever chemicals,” says Louise Hunt, co-founder of sustainable beauty label Papermoon. The focus, rather, is on “natural antibacterial and antiperspirant capabilities, such as coconut oil, tapioca starch and magnesium,” adds skin expert James Vivian.

Formulas have evolved considerably. What were once chalky, short-lived sticks are now elegant balms, lightweight gels and skincare-led formulas that hold their own through long days. Finding the right fit may take some trial and error. Hunt’s advice: “Stick with it – your body will love you for it.”

To make the transition a little easier, we’ve rounded up nine of the best natural deodorants to try, from local favourite Papermoon to cult staple Salt & Stone

Nine of the best natural deodorants to shop

Papermoon Aloe & Agave deodorant

$22
Papermoon Aloe & Agave deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Aloe vera, magnesium and coconut oil | Size: 75g | Baking soda: No

This locally made balm is packaged entirely in compostable paper – no plastic, anywhere. Aloe vera’s natural antibacterial properties do the heavy lifting, while magnesium hydroxide keeps odour in check without baking soda – a win for those with sensitive skin.

Uni Skin Soothing deodorant

$49.26
Uni Skin Soothing deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Sugarcane enzymes and tapioca starch | Size: 52.5g | Baking soda: No

Aussie-founded label Uni takes an elevated approach to deodorant. Sugarcane-derived enzymes neutralise odour, while green seaweed, holy basil and lady thistle feel calming on skin. It’s refillable, leaves no residue and features a soothing scent of cedar, juniper and sandalwood.

Tronque natural deodorant

$50
Tronque natural deodorant
Type: Gel | Active ingredients: Sugar-derived enzymes and pomegranate oil | Size: 50g | Baking soda: No

The most technically ambitious entry on the list comes courtesy of Kiwi label Tronque. A nature-derived muscle relaxant mimics botox, reducing sweat gland activity at the source. And wellness doesn’t stop at the formula – the stainless-steel roller ball doubles as a lymphatic drainage tool, encouraging circulation each time it’s applied.

Necessaire The Deodorant Gel Eucalyptus

$35
Necessaire The Deodorant Gel Eucalyptus
Type: Gel | Active ingredients: AHAs, niacinamide and chamomile flower extract | Size: 50g | Baking soda: No

Necessaire applies its signature skincare-first logic to underarms, too. A five-per-cent AHA blend targets discolouration and texture, while niacinamide supports the skin barrier. This one’s for those who take active ingredients below the jawline.

Rodeo Demeter deodorant balm

$30
Rodeo Demeter deodorant balm
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Organic tallow, olive oil and magnesium | Size: 50g | Baking soda: No

For the ingredient-conscious, it doesn’t get more stripped back than this. Rodeo’s formula contains just five ingredients, all described by the brand as “edible”: organic grass-fed tallow, olive oil, arrowroot powder, diatomaceous earth and magnesium.

Salt and Stone santal and vetiver deodorant

$36
Salt and Stone santal and vetiver deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, shea butter and magnesium | Size: 75g | Baking soda: Yes

People come for the scent – sandalwood, amber, cedar and vetiver – and stay because the probiotics and niacinamide deliver skincare benefits over time. It’s worth noting this one includes baking soda, so it’s best avoided if you’ve got sensitive skin.

Salt Lab magnesium deodorant

$33
Salt Lab magnesium deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Coconut oil, tapioca starch and magnesium | Size: 30g | Baking soda: No

An Australian-made, unscented balm built around one hero ingredient: magnesium sourced from the Tibetan Plateau. It’s third-party tested for heavy metals and microplastics, offering added peace of mind for any clean beauty devotees.

Caudalie Vinofresh natural stick deodorant

$29
Caudalie Vinofresh natural stick deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Glycolic acid and organic grape water | Size: 50g | Baking soda: No

The French pharmacy wave has gained momentum in recent years – and Caudalie sits firmly within it. The brand’s signature prebiotic grape water, sourced from its Bordeaux vineyards, helps rebalance the underarm microbiome to tackle the cause rather than mask the issue – and it’s baking soda-free, pregnancy-safe and mark-free on clothing.

Malin & Goetz Eucalyptus deodorant

$26
Malin & Goetz Eucalyptus deodorant
Type: Balm | Active ingredients: Eucalyptus extract, citronellyl and glycerin | Size: 28g | Baking soda: No

A longstanding Mecca favourite that earns its reputation through simplicity. The plant-powered formula is centred on eucalyptus extract, proven to fight odour-causing bacteria, with no alcohol, no parabens and nothing unnecessary.
