Sydney-based womenswear designer Christopher Esber continues his meteoric rise to the top of the fashion world, winning the top prize at the Andam Fashion Awards in Paris overnight.
Esber, chosen from a pool of 12 finalists, will receive a €300,000 (AU$483,000) grant to develop his label, plus a 12-month mentorship from Saint Laurent creative director (and head judge) Anthony Vaccarello.
The Andam prize, backed by industry heavyweights such as LVMH and Kering, expects winners to show at future Paris Fashion Weeks and open a flagship store in the city. The award, announced on the final night of Paris Couture Week, has previously been won by designers such as Martin Margiela, Jeremy Scott and A.P.C.’s Jean Touitou.
Esber launched his eponymous label which in 2010, showing at last year’s Paris Fashion Week after years of hosting showrooms and buying appointments. Known for his strategically cut-out, deconstructed eveningwear, his creations have been worn by A-list stars such as Emma Roberts, Greta Lee and Hailey Bieber.
