For the first time since 2006, Stephen Mallatratt’s celebrated adaptation of the 1983 novel will come to life in a production starring two industry veterans.

Horror buffs get ready: The Woman in Black is coming to Australia.

Susan Hill’s 1983 gothic horror novel is no stranger to adaptations. The Woman in Black has been translated for the screen twice (a 1989 telemovie and a 2012 film starring a post-Potter Daniel Radcliffe) and interpreted for the stage by playwright Stephen Mallatratt. Performed for the first time in 1987, Mallatratt’s spooky adaptation garnered much acclaim and went on to become the second-longest-running West End play in history after The Mousetrap.

“It’s such an incredible, gripping show that is so spellbinding, it has you on the edge of your seat for two hours,” producer Alex Woodward said in a statement. “I knew I had to bring it back to Australia”.

The story opens with solicitor Arthur Kipps sharing a ghost story with his family, reflecting on an experience he had years earlier in the small town of Crythin Gifford, where he went to settle the estate of a reclusive widow. It was there, at the eerie, secluded Eel Marsh House, that he encountered the Woman in Black. He looks back, attempting to unearth the secrets of the past and the mysterious spectre that still torments him.

The production stars Australian industry veterans John Waters (Rush, Offspring, Rake) and Daniel MacPherson (Neighbours, The Bill, Godspell). Waters reprises his role as Arthur Kipps, who he last brought to life in 2006, to deliver the thrills that have made this creepy tale a classic of the genre.

The production opens in Toowomba on April 27 before travelling through Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Canberra, finishing up in Newcastle on July 27.
