HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival at Palace Cinemas

The HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival returns from June 10 to July 12, bringing a curated selection of contemporary Spanish-language cinema to Palace Cinemas, Palace Nova and Luna Palace Cinemas around Australia. This year’s program features more than 30 films spanning romance, thrillers, documentaries, comedy and historical drama, alongside a handful of restored classics.

Opening the festival is Mistura, a lush Peruvian drama starring Bárbara Mori. Set in 1960s Lima, it follows a woman rebuilding her life through food, with the country’s celebrated culinary culture taking centrestage. The festival centrepiece is Sundays (Los Domingos) – set to premiere across the country excluding Perth – winner of the Golden Shell (Best Film) at the 2025 San Sebastian Film Festival. Special presentations include Brazilian drama Isabel featuring a Noche del Vino event, as well as Alejandro Amenábar’s historical adventure The Captive, inspired by the early life of Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes.

Other highlights include Nothing Between Us, a romantic drama led by Gael García Bernal and Natalia Oreiro; Carla Simón’s acclaimed family mystery Romería; and Gabriel Mascaro’s Berlinale standout The Blue Trail – a visually striking Brazilian fable set along the Amazon.

Music lovers can catch salsa documentary La Salsa Vive and the community-driven drama Band Together, while thriller fans can dive into espionage tale Sofia’s Suspicion, survival thriller Balandrau, Where the Fierce Wind Blew and darkly comic crime caper Luger.

The program also includes a retrospective thread, Uncanny Allegory, featuring Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone, Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel and Víctor Erice’s The Spirit of the Beehive. The festival closes with a 60th-anniversary restoration of Carlos Saura’s landmark psychological drama The Hunt.
