Various Venues
Featuring 34 films across three and a half weeks, the Moro Spanish Film Festival is a celebration of all things Spanish and Latin American on the big screen.

Screening nationally around Australia at Palace Cinemas from April 19, this year’s Spanish Film Festival features two key programme strands: New Spanish Cinema, focusing on what’s new from Spain, and Cine Latino, taking in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world.

Opening night sees the Australian premiere of Official Competition, a savagely funny behind-the-scene satire of filmmaking featuring three of world cinema’s biggest stars: Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, and Oscar Martinez.

Other highlights include the award-winning comedy Language Lessons starring Natalie Morales and Mark Duplass; the gripping drama about the aftermath of a terrorist attack Maixabel; the Australian premiere of dramatic comedy Amalgam; and special sessions of the lovingly restored Mexican wrestling cult classic Santo and Blue Demon Vs Dr. Frankenstein.

There’s also an Australian connection to this year’s Festival with the premiere of locally produced Our Voices (Nuestras Voces). Directed by Diana Paola Paez, this documentary tells the story of a group of Spanish-speaking migrants who arrived in Victoria between the 1960s and 1980s, creating a powerful examination of the strength and resilience of immigrants.

With music, tapas, Q&A sessions and more at the various special events taking place throughout the festival, it’s a chance for audiences to be immersed in Spanish culture and cinema.
