From the Milan Triennale to the Memphis Group, 20th-century Italian design takes centre stage at Heide.

Celebrate the ingenuity and innovation of Italian design at Heide with Molto Bello: Icons of Modern Italian Design presented by Webuild, opening on October 26 and running until late March.

Showcasing some of the most significant Italian design achievements of the 20th century, Molto Bello spans the 60-year period from the very first Milan Triennale in the 1930s to the influential and sometimes outrageous Memphis Group, or Memphis Milano, in the 1980s. From classic chairs, lamps and homewares through to the Olivetti Valentine typewriter and the iconic Vespa, the exhibition tells the story of the alliance between Italy’s rich craft tradition and industry, examining how Italy’s post-war economic boom sparked a wave of experimentation in design.

On display are works from legendary design names whose daring creations defined movements around the world, including architect-designers Gio Ponti and Carlo Mollino; innovators Gae Aulenti, Joe Colombo and the Castiglioni brothers; the vivid, unmistakable colours and shapes of the Radical Design movement; Ettore Sottsass and Memphis Milano; and visionaries such as Nanda Vigo and Gaetano Pesce.

For one night only on February 14th, Heide is hosting a special Valentine’s Day treat where lovers of art can enjoy a relaxed evening at Heide. That’s Amore: Art By Twilight is a special invites guests to explore the vibrant exhibition Molto Bello: Icons of Modern Italian Design, listen to one of the pop-up talks, and enjoy food and drinks from Heide Kitchen, live music in the forecourt and retail therapy in the Heide Third Drawer Down shop.
