Carriageworks is premiering a major new video work by Polish-Australian artist and filmmaker Kuba Dorabialski online.
The work – which reflects the perspective of the Polish-born, Sydney-based Dorabialski – uses a fictional language created by the artist. It bears similarities to Slavic languages; so much so that some words will be intelligible to Slavic-language speakers. The work dives into memories – some that are real and some warped by time and distance – and asks the question: “What is this thing we call Eastern Europe?”
The trilogy is the final compilation of a series of videos Dorabialski began in 2017: two short works and a final, feature-length work, Connection of the Sticks. It was set to premiere as a three-channel video installation at Carriageworks before the city went into lockdown and is still slated to open physically to the public once restrictions are lifted.
A discussion between Dorabialski and Carriageworks director of programs Daniel Mudie Cunningham will be streamed online on August 31.
Watch online here from August 18. If lockdown ends on August 28, the videos will be exhibited IRL from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, until October 10.
