A live recording of the award-winning musical Hamilton (with the original Broadway cast) was meant to hit Disney’s streaming service Disney+ in October 2021. But amid the coronavirus outbreak, the release date was brought forward 15 months to July 3, 2020.
The modern classic, which was written by composer, lyricist and actor Lin Manuel Miranda, has won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Grammy Award for best musical theatre album.
It follows the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, who was an immigrant from the West Indies. He worked closely with George Washington, became the US’s first treasury secretary and founded the New York Post and the US Coast Guard. The story is told via a blend of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap and R'n'B.
It will open IRL at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in March 2021, six years after debuting on Broadway in New York City in 2015. It’s since toured the US, and it opened on London’s West End in 2017.
