Spice-rich dahl, golden parathas and punchy Burmese salads have earned Margaret River curry canteen Dahl Daddys a cult following, with interstate fans including Attica ’s Ben Shewry and social media cooking giant Andy Hearnden.
Though owners Corey Rozario and Imogin Mitchell were forced to close their beloved, skatepark-adjacent eatery earlier this year, the team is far from done. The team are packing their pots for a cross-country tour, bringing their soulful Burmese and South Asian cooking with them.
First stop is Melbourne on Saturday 16 August at record shop Skydiver, where the team will serve their namesake dahl, plus fish parathas and Burmese fried chicken dusted with whitebait salt.
Next comes Canberra’s Ak’s Diner, where they’ll squeeze into the takeaway shop’s tiny service window for lunch on Friday August 22 and dinner on Saturday August 23. Expect dahl, laphet, and nan gyi thoke – a chicken curry noodle salad enriched with roasted besan flour for a deep, nutty kick.
On Sunday August 31, the team lands in Sydney for a high-energy collab with Hearnden at Kyiv Social, with the goal of cranking out 1,000 plates of dhal, beef short rib curry and ohn no khao swè in a single day. Proceeds will help fund earthquake relief in Burma and an agricultural school in a Thai refugee camp.
The Sunshine Coast is next on Tuesday 9 September, with a one-off dinner at Samila Gaeng. Here, the team will serve a six-course Thai Burmese menu featuring lahpet with Moreton Bay bug floss and more.
Then it’s onto Adelaide on Thursday September 25 at burger bar 99 Gang Social. A Dahl Daddys-style banh mi will sneak onto a snack-heavy menu alongside Southeast Asian-inspired cocktails.
The tour wraps in Perth on Saturday October 18 at Big Don’s Smoked Meats, where you might find smoked curry among other cross-cultural barbeque experiments on your platter.
Dahl Daddys are raising funds to deliver medical aid, food, and support for school and infrastructure projects to Burmese communities in need.
