Win: A Two-Night Stay at Byron Bay’s Casa Avalon With MCM House

Some places make you want to do nothing at all. Casa Avalon, tucked into the hills between Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby, is one of them. This winter, MCM House – the Australian furniture label known for its relaxed, considered approach to design – is offering the chance to swap your usual view for two nights at the design-led cabin, set on 11 acres just 15 minutes from Byron Bay.

The dark timber barn is unassuming from the road, its spotted gum cladding and gabled roof blend seamlessly into the landscape. Step inside and the mood shifts. French oak floors and an open fireplace run through a single open-plan living and dining space, where a stainless steel kitchen sits alongside a big sliding door that frames the view all the way from the hinterland out to the ocean.

The main bedroom has a queen bed, and the bunk room sleeps two more on king singles – comfortable enough for four, with an extra bed available on request. Out front, there’s room to spread out around the open-fire barbeque for slow al-fresco nights watching the sun go down over the hills, plus a table tennis table for whoever’s not on cooking duty.

It’s five minutes from the beach and close enough to Byron Bay to dip into the area’s best bars and eateries, like Broadsheet favourite Bar Heather. But it’s far enough removed that you can just as easily switch off entirely and let the days run together.

Like Casa Avalon, MCM House’s new Umbria collection is built around the rhythms of cooking, eating, gathering and resting. It’s fitting, then, that the brand shot its new short film, Umbria Stay, on location here, styling pieces from the collection throughout the property. The range spans tables, sofas and bed frames through to rugs and lamps, in neutral tones, tactile woods and coastal-inspired textiles.
