In a media release shared on September 11, Netflix confirmed that Australian actress Yerin Ha will be the romantic lead in the fourth season of Bridgerton.
The fourth series will focus on bisexual, polyamorous, scene-stealing, swoopy-haired Benedict Bridgerton, the second son in the alphabetically named family. Without wading too deeply into spoiler territory, the story, which is based on Julia Quinn’s novel An Offer from a Gentleman, is a Cinderella story complete with masks, mistaken identities and maids.
The book centres on Sophie Beckett, who in the show will be known as Sophie Baek.
In a statement, Ha said: “A name is the first bit of identity that you share with the world, and that’s why changing a name can be so powerful. To make Sophie’s name fit someone who looks like me is really empowering. It’s a really nice way for me to feel like the role is fit for me, rather than me having to fit a certain mould.”
Born in Sydney to Korean parents, Ha has acting in her blood. Her parents met at drama school and her grandmother is renowned Korean actress Son Sook. Ha moved back to Seoul as a teenager where she trained at Kaywon High School of Arts before returning to Sydney to study at NIDA, graduating in 2018.
Ha’s acting credits include a season with the Sydney Theatre Company in 2019, acting alongside Mia Wasikowska and Eliza Scanlen in Lord of the Flies, and starring roles in Steven Spielberg’s Halo and Stan series Bad Behaviour.
Filming will commence this month and is expected to wrap in April 2025, but no release date for the season has been confirmed.
