World-Class Art and a Festival of Fire: What To Do (and Where To Stay) in Melbourne This Winter
Words by Evan Jones · Updated on 13 May 2026 · Published on 13 May 2026
Melbourne doesn’t slow down just because the days get a little shorter and colder. If anything, Australia’s cultural capital ramps up the entertainment in winter, packing the calendar with music festivals, night markets, light shows and plenty more.
With so much on, narrowing it down can be a challenge – especially if you’re only in town briefly. To help, we’ve picked five standout events to anchor a winter visit, along with nearby places to stay so you can settle in and make the most of it.
Rising + Melbourne Marriott
Each year, Rising is Melbourne’s light in the depths of wintry darkness. The festival brings a packed program of music, art and performance to the city for two weeks, from May 27 to June 8, headlined this year by acts like Welsh art-pop sensation Cate Le Bon and pioneering New York rapper Lil’ Kim; Navajo composer Raven Chacon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning installation, Voiceless Mass; and A Year Without Summer, the latest mind-bending stage show from Austrian iconoclast Florentina Holzinger.
The Rising program is, frankly, enormous, so if you’re in Melbourne for a day or two, there’s bound to be something to see or do. It’s worth planning ahead – both for tickets and a place to stay nearby – so you can move easily between events.
At the top end of the city, Melbourne Marriott places you within walking distance of key festival venues, making it a natural fit for your Rising schedule. And the hotel’s pre-theatre dining package makes your show-night itinerary a breeze. Get two or three courses and a drink at the in-house Essence restaurant, with its modern Australian menu focused on local ingredients, for just $59 or $69 before heading out on the town.
Firelight Festival + Marriott Hotel Docklands
If you’re the sort of person who yearns to sit in front of a roaring fire when winter really sets in, Firelight Festival might be for you. Each year the nocturnal Docklands event adds a spark to those dark winter nights with fire dancers and light installations, plus a food market, live music, storytelling and roaming performances. The program is still under wraps for 2026 but, if last year is any indication, Docklands is set for a fiery weekend full of food and fantastical creations from July 4 to 6 – and it’s all free to enter.
Marriott Hotel Docklands is a stone’s throw away from all the action, making it easy to pop down the lift and catch the fire dancing. And its rooftop bar (plus, if you’re lucky, your room) offers unparalleled views of the flames and luminous installations.
Lightscape + Element Richmond
Usually, the Royal Botanic Gardens’ picnic-worthy lawns and sprawling beds of rare and eye-catching plants are best appreciated during daylight. But from June 12 to August 2, a visit is all about taking advantage of the inky depths of winter evenings, with Lightscape using the darkness as a canvas for a huge array of light installations. This year, light artists from around the world will build luminous walkways and large-scale, interactive works that offer a new way to see and explore the famous gardens – with mulled wine, hot chocolate and other treats along the way.
Take advantage of Melbourne’s riverside bike paths with a stay at the sustainability-focused Element Richmond on the Yarra. Its Bikes to Borrow program means you can cycle to the gardens, taking in city sights along the way.
NGV Winter Masterpieces + AC Hotel Southbank
The NGV doesn’t miss, but it does seem to save its best for the annual Winter Masterpieces exhibition. In 2025, the blockbuster midyear series brought us some of the world’s best-loved paintings as part of its French Impressionists show, and this winter is also set to dazzle. From June 12 until October 26, the NGV brings a glittering exhibition of Cartier jewellery to Melbourne, in partnership with London’s storied Victoria & Albert Museum. Highlights include Cartier’s iconic Panther brooch, Mystery clock and Tank watch – but with 300-plus pieces, you’ll need a full afternoon to see it all.
AC Hotel Southbank offers a convenient base for evenings spent moving between cultural institutions, with the river and surrounding precinct coming alive during major winter programs. Cap off your night with a drink at the hotel, which has partnered with Southbank distillery Patient Wolf on a curated gin program at its seventh-floor Bar Triana.
Winter Night Market + Courtyard by Marriott Melbourne
Visiting Melbourne midweek has its advantages – especially in winter, when the Queen Victoria Market’s yearly night market brings the city to life. Each Wednesday night throughout June, July and August, the historic sheds heat up with food stalls, live music and even a silent disco, plus jewellery, homewares and more from local artists and producers. The Winter Night Market is free entry, so save those coins for all the steaming bowls of noodles, raclette and fresh pastries.
Courtyard by Marriott Melbourne by Flagstaff Gardens is perfectly positioned for a Night Market visit. Stroll back after you’ve eaten your fill, or you can bring some of that street-food up to your room for later.
