These book bundles offer a selection of titles from Australian surfing to European history to cooking, and mean you don’t need to do the thinking – although you can still take all the credit.

Even in this very off-script year, we’re still keeping one tradition going: Father’s Day (Sunday, September 6). And the good people at Wellread have a nifty idea that doesn’t require much thinking but still allows you to take all the gift-giving glory.

The New South Wales-based online book subscription service has created three Father’s Day packs, each comprising three new release books and priced at $85 (including shipping Australia-wide). There’s no particular theme to each pack, but the selection skews toward non-fiction.

In one pack you’ll find Melbourne-based cook Julia Busuttil Nishimura’s *A Year of Simple Family Food, in another, there’s the latest novel from Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell. There are books that look to the past, such as The Golden Maze, which explores the history of Prague, or Golden Daze*, a chronicle of Australian surfing.

Others look forward: Glimpses of Utopia provides cause for optimism – it’s a series of case studies about things we’re getting right in this day and age; Fire Country, meanwhile, argues that Indigenous fire management could be the key to avoiding repeats of this year’s devastating bushfires.

The rest are just downright entertaining. Take Jennifer Ackerman’s The Bird Way – it’s a corker of a read that spotlights the wacky (and sometimes very impressive) things that birds get up to.

“The reading habits of dads often get oversimplified – think airport novels and sport bios,” says Laura Brading, co-founder of Wellread. “We know not every dad is hanging out to read the latest Lee Child … so we’ve put together three curated packs for the bookish dads out there.”

You can even add a personalised message to arrive with your pack.

If none of the Father’s Day packs grab your attention, there’s a host of other bundles on the site, too. These are more curated, focusing on texts that amplify BIPOC and First Nations voices. There’s also a monthly subscription service. For $35 a month get a new release book, plus reading notes and access to a members-only Facebook page for discussions.

Wellread recommends placing your Father’s Day order by August 31. Book bundles are $85 (including shipping) and can be sent Australia-wide.
