Australian Royalty: Elizabeth Debicki Wins Emmy For Her Performance as Diana in The Crown

The 76th Emmy Awards are on now in LA, bringing with them all the standard sartorial commentary, accolades and, for Aussies, some patriotic pride.

Elizabeth Debicki has won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown.

Debicki, who was nominated in the same category last year but lost out to Jennifer Coolidge, played the People’s Princess in two seasons of the prestige drama. In her acceptance speech, she said, “Playing this part based on this unparalleled, incredible human being has been my great privilege”.

Debicki beat out six other actresses including Christine Baranski, Greta Lee and Holland Taylor for the win.

Also nominated was fellow Australian Naomi Watts for her performance in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, where she plays magazine editor and socialite Babe Paley. Watts’s lost out to Jodie Foster who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for True Detective: Night Country.

Full disclosure: Debicki and Watts were born in Paris and Kent respectively, but both moved to Australia during childhood, so we claim them – like pavlova.

The biggest winners of the night are The Bear, Baby Reindeer and Shogun with four wins each.
