Seven Comfort Shows You’ll Never Tire of Rewatching This Summer

Back into your routine, but still craving comfort? There’s nothing like sinking into the couch, putting your feet up and popping on an old favourite show. Luckily, Disney+ boasts an unrivalled selection of comfort classics. From early-2000s sitcoms to medical and legal dramas that’ll still have you holding your breath, here are seven iconic series we’re pressing play on.
For slapstick humour: The Office
From 2005 to 2013, the American rendition of The Office filmed nine seasons and became a defining sitcom of the era – for good reason. Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton-based paper supply branch is the bleak setting for the antics of the hilariously incompetent Michael Scott (Steve Carrell) and his begrudging team of employees, all captured in shaky mocumentary style. You’ll laugh as Jim (John Krasinski) pranks know-it-all coworker Dwight (Rainn Wilson), cringe as Michael fumbles time and again, and cross your fingers for a slow-burn office romance.
For a quirky medical drama: House
While the early 2000s were saturated with medical series – Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, ER – House stood out with its sharp edge. It’s more like a detective show, where the villain is an endless stream of medical mysteries, and the protagonist is an irreverent anti-hero: a doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients. Hugh Laurie plays the prickly Dr Gregory House, whose brutal honesty and obsession with finding the answer carry the show for eight seasons.
For belly laughs: Modern Family
With a star-studded ensemble cast including Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family follows three interconnected families over 10 years and 11 seasons. Filmed by a fictional documentary crew, the series tracks the clan as they navigate the messiness and misunderstandings of life. It’s bound to make you squirm, roll your eyes and laugh until you cry.
For a feel-good watch: Parks and Recreation
The widely adored American sitcom stars Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope, a public servant on a mission to make her small town a better place. Laugh along as she battles bureaucracy alongside a large cast of coworkers – played by an impressive range of performers including Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt and Adam Scott. Settle in: all seven seasons are available on Disney+.
For family chaos: Arrested Development
Deadpan Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) and his sweet son George Michael (Michael Cera) serve as the reluctant moral compasses of a nutty family thrown into financial ruin after the patriarch is arrested for suspicious accounting. It’s a riches-to-rags tale defined by razor-sharp writing, nonstop gags and Michael’s infuriatingly inescapable relatives. The first three seasons were filmed from 2003 to 2005, and they’re available to watch.
For fast-paced excitement: Suits
Running for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019, Suits proves its staying power. Dive back into the high-stakes world of Manhattan corporate law, where hotshot lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and his genius, yet unqualified, protege Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) make one risky play after another. They’re supported by a starry cast, including Megan Markle as Rachel, the firm’s top paralegal.
For a hit of nostalgia: Lizzie McGuire
Hilary Duff stars as the inimitable 13-year-old Lizzie McGuire in this early-2000s coming-of-age series. Take a trip down memory lane as she and her best friends attempt to survive junior high – scheming, dealing with crushes and dealing with a relentless little brother and exasperated parents. It’s all narrated by her animated alter ego. And yes, the fashion is iconic.
