A man is dead and another person critically injured after a helicopter crash at Hobart Airport earlier this evening.

The crash occurred around 5.30pm when the two-passenger helicopter hit the ground just metres from the runway. It's unclear if the helicopter was taking off or landing at the time, or if the man who died was the pilot or passenger. The ABC is reporting that many people at the airport witnessed the crash, and the hundreds of passengers in the terminal remained calm when it was announced the airport would be closing. Some boarded buses to Launceston Airport, with others heading home or to hotels.

All flights to and from Hobart have been cancelled until further notice, with the airport advising all travellers to check with their airlines for updates on the status of specific flights. It is unclear if flights will resume on Wednesday.
