A New Chapter for Broadsheet

A New Chapter for Broadsheet
A letter to our readers about our new digital subscription.

· Updated on 10 Apr 2026 · Published on 10 Apr 2026

Broadsheet was born in 2009. Almost 17 years later, we cover more cities than ever and our coverage of culture has never been more expansive.

Since day one, our mission remains steadfast – to be the definitive guide to city culture and to help you live better every day. We remain 100 per cent independent, something we are deeply proud of in one of the world’s most concentrated media markets.

We are taking a significant step to ensure we can keep doing that work – and do it better than ever before.

Soon, Broadsheet will move to a metered digital subscription. This means you can still enjoy a number of our stories for free each month, but for unlimited access, we invite you to become a subscriber.

Why now?

The media landscape is changing rapidly. Publishers committed to original reporting, accuracy and high-quality storytelling, like ours, must adapt.

By moving to a subscription model, we are doubling down on our commitment to you and the cities we call home. This change will allow us to:

• Stay independent – a reader-supported model ensures we’re able to stay independent, guaranteeing our coverage and recommendations remain independent too. When we tell you a restaurant is worth your time, it’s because it is – not because someone paid us to say it.

• Produce more of the stories our subscribers love – we can have a more direct conversation with subscribers about the stories they love, what they want more of and how we can help make their cultural lives richer.

• Help you explore your city like never before – we are investing in changes to the site that will not only help you better navigate, explore and research your city, but help you turn your culture hit list into concrete plans.

Importantly, this change isn’t just about protecting what we already have – it’s about building what comes next.

What you’ll get

Alongside unlimited access to every story, guide and profile on the Broadsheet site, a digital subscription also includes membership to Access, unlocking exclusive events, giveaways and rewards – all curated by the team that knows culture and your city best.

We’re also launching a new subscriber-only newsletter, Chef’s Special, giving you exclusive access to the best chefs in Australia and overseas – ask the pros anything, find out where they’re eating, shop their favourite kitchen gear, discover their go-to recipe, and more. Plus, more subscriber-only newsletters are coming.

In the coming months, we’re also rolling out new digital features to help you curate your own Broadsheet experience, populate interactive maps with the venues you love and receive tailored recommendations based on exactly what you’re looking for.

Our promise

We believe that high-quality, local journalism is essential to enriching city life, culture and our communities. We cover culture with passion and expertise, and every Broadsheet story is underpinned by original reporting and writing. Pieces are scrutinised and fact-checked by editors and in-house sub-editors. We commission original photography, produce original editorial video and have a dedicated in-house design team.

We strive every day to bring you stories that inform, surprise, entertain and delight – and which help showcase the incredible people, businesses and organisations that make our cities so culturally rich. By becoming a Broadsheet subscriber, you help us continue that mission.

Thank you for being part of our journey so far. We can’t wait to show you what’s next.
