The history of solid perfume dates to ancient Egyptian times, when scented unguents were created using beeswax and fragrant oils. It’s believed Cleopatra concocted a blend of cardamom, cinnamon and olive oil, pouring it into ceramic amphoras that could be refilled and re-used. Modern-day queens can also take pleasure in solid and sustainable fragrances. Odesse is one of them – a beeswax-based, pocket-sized perfume housed in refillable compacts.
“Odesse was born from the want to offer a sustainable fragrance option with a premium feel,” says founder Anthony Nasr, in a statement. Combining beeswax, jojoba oil, castor-seed oil and perfume, each of the six solid-block fragrances can be housed in a chic reusable container.
“Billions of units of packaging are produced globally every year by the cosmetic industry, so our refill system was designed to help minimise waste and offer an alternative you can feel good about,” says Nasr.
Fragrances range from sweet and juicy (Amber Haze, Rose Wood, Forest Floor) to warm and woody (Deep Orchid) and feminine and floral (Winter Field). They’re designed to be applied to your pulse points with a swipe of a finger. When you’ve used all the fragrance, remove your used aluminium pan, which can be recycled, and replace it with a refill. You can switch up your fragrances easily; pans are locked in with magnets and simple to change.
“The perfumes are designed to give customers the option to play around with different fragrances,” says Nasr. “One vessel, six scents.”
Nasr launched Odesse after a decade working in the beauty industry. “Perhaps fragrance is something that’s perceived to be more sustainable in the cosmetic industry because it doesn’t come in plastic bottles,” says Nasr. “However, what a lot of people don’t realise with fragrance is they are paying for a product that can be up to 80 to 90 per cent ethanol and sometimes as little as 5 per cent fragrance.
“An issue with products that rely on water or ethanol is the carbon emissions required to ship them around world. Odesse is a fraction of the size without comprising on performance.”
Odesse perfume solids are made in Australia and range from $69.95 with refills starting from $39.95.
