Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) has a poo machine. It’s an artwork by Belgium’s Wim Delvoye called Cloaca Professional, and anyone who has visited the working gastrointestinal machine will recall its stomach-churning stench.

In the lead up to this week’s raging Black Friday sales events, Mona is inviting shoppers and lovers of art and science to watch a livestream of its poo machine before gaining access to the museum’s shop in order to snap up a “Brown Thursday” bargain.

Cloaca Professional will be fed at 11am coinciding with a palate-cleansing starter deal unveiled to shoppers,” says Mona’s tantalising press release. More deals will be unlocked as the day’s meal progresses through Cloaca’s digestive system.

Brown Thursday discounts will be applied to select items from the Mona Shop, including the store’s vulva-shaped soaps. The biggest offer will be revealed (letter by letter) as the poo machine defecates. Pure class.

The event is in response to the growing popularity of the Black Friday sales events. On Instagram, Mona said: “Pretty debased affair, all told. People climbing over octogenarians to get their hands on a 4K TV, etc. Gross.”

Brown Thursday runs from 11am to 2pm on Thursday November 25 via Facebook and Instagram. There’ll also be discounts of 11 per cent available until midnight on Monday November 29 for those who can’t stomach the livestream.
