Curves of plywood, environmentally-friendly American hardwood timber (white oak, walnut and white ash) and LED lights combine to create Stack, the amalgam design that won the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Design Award. Now it’s available for you to buy.

Designed by Sydney-based designer Zachary Hanna, the unique lamp will launch as part of the Cult Design NAU range at the prestigious Denfair trade show in Melbourne.

In its fourth year the Mercedes-Benz Design Award asked designers to conceptualise innovative and sustainable objects for the living space. Stack combines the functionality of several living room objects – a lamp, a bookshelf and a side table – into one simple product. The idea was praised by the judges for offering a point of difference in the market.

“Zachary addresses the sustainability issue with his choice of material and lamp selection,” says Adele Winteridge, founding director of Foolscap Studio. “A clever and thoughtful product designed with empathy for the user. I definitely need this in my lounge.”

Hanna says Stack’s potential for longevity is a huge factor in its sustainability. “You see a lot of flatpack furniture on the side of the road and it’s probably because it’s such an unsubstantial form of construction,” he says. “Whereas with this you have beautiful solid-timber joinery. It doesn’t degrade. That lends itself to not being thrown out.”

Production started only a week after Stack won the Mercedes-Benz Design Award; Cult Design’s product-development team collaborated with Hanna in a rigorous process of review, development and design testing.

“The main tweak we made to prepare Stack for production was with the electrics,” says Richard Munao, Cult Design’s managing director. “Zac’s original design had removable panels to hide the wiring that leads to the bulb, but during initial meetings we knew we could better streamline this integration. Our product-development team worked with Zac to find a way to conceal the wires internally, channelling them upright to the shade to create a seamless integration.”

Cult Design will specifically spotlight Stack in its launch at Denfair, and it will appear in an augmented-reality app designed so customers can “visualise furniture and accessories” in their own spaces and discover additional product details.
