After the devastating bushfires of last summer, Australians are again bracing for another scorching season as the inevitable threat of fire looms. As we enter the warmer months, this means taking the right steps and being as best equipped as possible - and Australia’s oldest working textile mill is doing its piece to be part of the plan.

Established in 1874, Waverley Mills crafts designer wool products that are produced on the banks of Distillery Creek in Launceston, Tasmania. From picnic rugs to throws, its pieces fuse the finest quality wool, alpaca, and cotton with centuries-old artisanship in a range of world-class essentials. The brand also has a commitment to recycling, using off-cuts from the factory floor to create new products like its recycled wool picnic rug collection.

But it’s their range of blankets that are proving most important as we move into the summer season. The Tasmanian wool mill has launched a new 100% woollen blanket range that aims to provide extra safety during fire season and will see $20 from each sale donated to Australian Fire Authorities.

As a naturally flame-resistant fibre, wool offers a greater level of fire safety than many other fibres, withstanding temperatures of up to 600°C. Unlike many common synthetics, wool never melts, meaning it doesn’t stick to the skin and can be used to cover the body in a fire emergency, providing a protective barrier against flames.

A 100% woollen blanket is even deemed an essential safety item, with fire authorities suggesting every at-risk home has them included in their prepared emergency survival kit, along with a battery-operated radio, waterproof torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, candles, waterproof matches and emergency contact numbers.

“At Waverley Mills, we’ve always had a strong connection to the land and were devastated to see the bushfires tear across our country last summer leaving behind a trail of destruction and loss,” says Waverley Mills spokesperson, Andrew Cuccurullo. “The Waverley Mills 100% Wool Contemporary Classic range is a way that we can raise awareness about the benefits of wool when it comes to fire preparedness and also give back to the fire services that work tirelessly to protect us all.”

The Waverley Mills 100% Wool Contemporary Classic blankets are currently available online at waverleymills.com and valued at $299. For every Waverley Mills 100% Wool Contemporary Classic Blanket sold in October, $20 will be donated to the Country Fire Authority (CFA).
